06.04. Purina Center, Kaarina

Jumps, sweat and laughs!  We had a really great two hours on our schedule last Saturday.  We went to Kaarina and the Purina Center, where we were trained in agility by Timo Liuhto, one of Finland's absolute top coaches.  We had also invited two of our trainees to come with us and we all enjoyed an afternoon full of useful exercises how to move more efficiently as a handler.  It's all about rythm and being in the right place at the right moment.  The handler's movements support the dog during its performance and the goal is to get such a smooth and easy handling as possible.  The course for the day was quite tricky here and there and offered a great deal of fun for both dogs and handlers.  Pasi and Taika did very well though Pasi had a few problems to find the key to Taika's stop button at some turns and his crazy "rocket dog" chose the wrong jumps.  My coordination, on the other hand, was just terrible.  I've always had a problem with the terms left and right and in combination with a fast dog the outcome is nothing else but a lovely disaster!  Della did a great job and when I have figured out how to manage my arms and legs, I think we still may have a quite bright agility future after all...  It was a pleasure to see how great our trainees did during the day too.  Our really big thanks go to the Dog's Club in Rauma, which offered us this opportunity.  Now we're looking forward to the upcoming outdoor season.

Kolme todella tyytyväistä koirakkoa.

Hyppyjä, hikeä ja naurua!  Meillä oli todella loistava kaksituntinen viime lauantaina.  Ajoimme Kaarinaan Purina Centerille, missä meillä oli agilitytreenit kouluttajana Timo Liuhto, yksi Suomen ehdottomista huippukouluttajista.  Olimme myös kutsuneet mukaan kaksi oppilastamme ja saimme kaikki nauttia iltapäivän aikana todella hyödyllisistä harjoituksista miten liikkua tehokkaammin ohjaajana.  Ohjauksessa tärkeintä on hyvä rytmi ja olla oikeassa paikassa oikealla hetkellä.  Ohjaajan liike tukee koiran suoritusta ja tavoitteena on saada ohjaus mahdollisimman joustavaksi ja helpoksi.  Päivän rata oli paikka paikoin melko haastava ja tarjosi paljon hauskuutta niin koirille kuin ohjaajillekin.  Pasi ja Taika onnistuivat todella hyvin vaikka Pasilla oli vaikeuksia saada Taika jarruttamaan tietyissä käännöksissä ja agilityhullu "rakettikoira" ampui väärään suuntaan.  Toisaalta minun kordinaatio oli aivan kauheaa.  Minulla on aina ollut ongelmia vasemman ja oikean kanssa ja yhdistelmään lisättynä nopea koira, ei lopputulos voi olla muuta kuin ihana katastrofi!  Della teki loistavaa työtä ja kun itse tajuan miten jalkani ja käteni toimivat, uskon, että meillä vielä voi olla valoisa agilityura edessämme...  Oli todella ilo nähdä miten hienosti oppilaamme onnistuivat päivän aikana.  Suuri kiitos RKS:lle joka tarjosi meille mahdollisuuden tähän.  Nyt odotamme innolla ulkokauden alkua.

30.03. Match Show, Harjavalta

Yesterday we attended the annual non-official dog show arranged by our Dog's Club in Harjavalta.  Easter combined with really lovely spring weather got the dog owners going and we had over a hundred participants altogether in the differents classes during the day.  Della and Taika participated in the class for Adult Dogs Small Breeds.  Della earned the red ribbon but didn't continue to the final for the red ribbon dogs.  I couldn't get Della to move well, because my lovely dog didn't at all like the wet and partly icy field.  Taika, on the other hand, didn't care much about field conditions.  Taika is our working machine, it moves through ice and water...  Taika was awarded with the blue ribbon and did very well.  Taika was placed third in the top four of the small adult dogs with blue ribbons.  Great!

Pääsiäisterveiset!

Eilen osallistuimme HPSH:n perinteiseen Pääsiäismätsäriin.  Pääsiäinen ja todella ihana kevät ilma sai koiraomistajat liikkeelle ja mätsärin kävijämäärä oli yli sata osallistujaa.  Della ja Taika osallistuivat Pienten Koirien-luokkaan.  Della sai punaisen nauhan, mutta ei päässyt punaisten finaaliin.  En saanut Della liikkumaan hyvin, koska kenttä oli neidin mielestä liian märkä ja osittain jäinen.  Taika taas ei välittänyt kentän kunnosta ollenkaan.  Taika on meidän työkone ja liikkuu niin märässä kuin jäässä...  Taika sai sinisen nauhan ja onnistui todella hyvin sinisten ryhmän loppukilpailussa sijoittuen kolmanneksi.  Upeaa! 

The joy of spring / Kevään iloa

The calendar says March, but winter just seems to go on and on...  We've been experiencing a really long winter by now and everyone is eagerly longing for springtime.  I like winter though.  It's beautiful when dressed in white and not just raining away.  The cold has been a bit too severe for me this winter but with the right clothes on there isn't actually a problem.  Taika and Della suffer more if too cold outside and turn into a pair of very skilled tap dancers when Jack Frost just get too frosty.

We've had a few weeks with extremely cold nights, but fortunately the sun has been comforting us during daytime.  Yesterday we enjoyed a two-hour-walk in the beautiful countryside of our village.  You could really feel and notice the first signs of spring in the air.  It's the warmth of the sun, the birds singing again and the sound of snow melting...  Taking a look at our dogs made it quite clear.  Spring makes you run of joy!  What a lovely madness!

Elämän iloa.

Kalenterissa lukee maaliskuu, mutta tuntuu, että talvi vain jatkuu ja jatkuu...  Talvi on ollut todella pitkäkestoinen tähän mennessä ja kaikki kaipaavat kipeästi kevään tuloa.  Pidän kuitenkin talvesta.  Se on todella kaunis valkoisessa hunnussaan eikä vain sada pois.  Minusta tämä talvi on ollut pikkasen liian kylmä mutta oikeilla vaatteilla se ei ole oikeastaan ongelmaa.  Taika ja Della kärsivät enemmän kylmyydestä ja perheeseemme kuuluu kaksi todella taitavaa steptanssijaa kun pakkanen puree aivan liian kovaa.

Viime viikon yöt ovat olleet todella kylmiä, mutta onneksi mukava auringonpaiste on hellinyt meitä päivisin.  Eilen nautimme kahden tunnin lenkistä Panelian ihanassa maastossa.  Kevään ensimmäiset merkit oli ilmassa ja se tuntui todella hyvältä.  Auringon lämpö, lintujen laulaminen ja ääni lumesta, joka sulaa...  Vielä katse meidän koiriin teki asiaan selväksi.  Kevät luo juoksemisen iloa!  Aivan ihana hulluus!

No puppies / Ei pentuja

Yesterday we got a very sad phone call from Holland.  Paige had given birth to four puppies but far too early.  Three puppies were born dead while the fourth, a tricoloured male, is at its best struggling for its life.  Our thoughts go to Paige's owners, the brave Paige and its little fighter.  We keep our fingers crossed for everything turning out well.  We'd also like to thank Ria and Rami for helping us getting in touch with their lovely Dutch friends.  We've been living a few really exciting months.

We didn't get a puppy from Holland nor from Finland, because the day before the call from Holland we got just as sad news from a Finnish breeder.  Her bitch was found empty after veterinarian examination.  The turns in life are not always easy to understand...

Pientä karvaista kaveria toivoen.

Saimme eilen todella surullisen puhelun Hollannista.  Paige oli synnyttänyt neljä pentua mutta aivan liian aikaisin.  Kolme pennuista oli syntynyt kuolleena ja neljäs pentu, trikkiuros, taistelee eloonjäämisestä.  Paigen omistajat, urhea Paige ja sen pieni taistelija ovat ajatuksissamme.  Pidämme peukkuja, että kaikki päättyy hyvin.  Haluamme myös kiittää Riaa ja Ramia, joiden kautta tämä mukava Hollantiyhteys tuli.  Olemme kokeneet muutamia todella jännittäviä kuukausia.

Emme tällä kertaa saaneet pentua Hollannista emmekä Suomesta, koska edellisenä päivänä saimme myös yhtä surullisia uutisia suomalaiselta kasvattajalta.  Eläinlääkäri oli todennut hänen nartunsa tyhjäksi.  Elämän käänteitä ei aina ole helppo ymmärtää...

Dogs of the Year / Vuoden Koirat

Our Dog's Club in Harjavalta has kept its annual meeting.  Besides handling the annual reports and checking the accounts of 2012, the board of the club also rewarded successful dogs of the year.  Our team got very lucky because Della was awarded the Newcomer of 2012 in Agility and Taika the Agility Dog of 2012 Size Small.

Harjavallan Palvelus- ja Seurakoiraharrastajat ry:n vuosikokous on pidetty.  Lisäksi, että kokouksessa käsiteltiin sääntömääräiset asiat, palkittiin myös seuran vuoden 2012-koirat lajittain.  Meidän tiimillä oli hyvä päivä, Della palkittiin Vuoden Agilitytulokkaaksi 2012 ja Taika saavutti Vuoden Agilitykoira Mini 2012-tittelin.

Good news / Hyviä uutisia

As mentioned before the thought of another puppy has grown stronger and stronger for every day lately.  Our home seems empty and almost too quiet nowadays just having two shelties barking at us while coming home after work.  A couple of our dearest friends suggested that we'd get in touch with their friends in Holland.  They knew that their Dutch friends planned a litter of sheltie puppies to their lovely bitch Paige this upcoming spring.  So we got in touch with Holland and yesterday we got wonderful news.  Paige (Fancy Free from Marmorea's Shelter) had been examined and according to the veterinarian Paige is expecting at least three puppies some time in the middle of March.  The father of the puppies is the very handsome tricoloured male Ledger (Salt City the Dark Knight).  Instead of jumping up and down of joy from now on, we're trying to stay calm by keeping our fingers crossed for a female puppy...  In the meanwhile we enjoy looking at the pictures of the absolute stunning parents.

Kuten joskus aikaisemmin ehkä on mainittu, ajatus uudesta pennusta on viime aikoina vahvistunut enemmän ja enemmän.  Kotimme tuntuu nykyään tyhjältä ja melkein liian hiljaiselta kun on vain kaksi shelttiä haukumassa meitä tullessamme kotiin työpäivän jälkeen.  Hyvä ystäväparimme ehdotti meille yhteyden ottamista heidän ystäviinsä Hollannissa.  He tiesivät, että heidän hollantilaiset ystävät suunnittelivat pentuja ihanalle Paige-sheltille tulevana keväänä.  Otimme heihin yhteyttä ja eilen saimme hyviä uutisia.  Paige (Fancy Free from Marmorea's Shelter) oli ollut eläinlääkärin tutkittavana ja maaliskuun puolivälissä on odotettavissa ainakin kolme pentua.  Pentujen isä on komea trikkiuros Ledger (Salt City the Dark Knight).  Sen sijaan, että hyppisimme ilosta, yritämme nyt vain pysyä rauhallisena ja pitää peukkuja narttupennusta...  Odotellessa nautimme ja katselemme tulevan pennun ihanien vanhempien kuvia.
