21.-22.02. Hu-Pu, Kuopio

I haven't been to the eastern parts of Finland so when Pasi got an invitation to visit one of his clients in Kuopio, I didn't hesitate to take a day off and go with him.  Of course we had also checked the calendar for agility competitions in the area at the time for our visit.  We knew so much that our coach, Reetta Pirttikoski, was going to judge at competitions arranged by Hukka-Putki ry (Hu-Pu) in Kuopio that very same weekend.

Reetta encouraged us to come with her and when she told us about the warm indoor hall, where you are able to compete in T-shirt during winter, my bag was definitely packed.  I just hate to compete when it's cold!

We drove 450 kilometers for a visit and a weekend competition.  We're probably a bit crazy, but so what!  You just live once - and how fun we had!  The indoor hall was just awesome!  It was really warm with an artificial turf I just loved.

Unfortunately Della did not like the hall at all.  Della has been training so well lately that I had almost forgotten that we have had serious problems when being at places where there are a lot of dogs, people and noise.  A few weeks ago our coach in obedience told us about dogs with problems and how easily they choose to fall back upon old habits, which usually means a problem behaviour, when being distressed.  This was what happened now - and without any warning.  Della did not see me nor she heard me.  She was like an electric eel on leash, just spinning around.  I knew I had to stay calm.  I used the clicker, which I always carry with me, and tried to get Della to do the tricks we do when situations like this occur.

I had three competitions on Saturday with Della and I was so sure that I won't be able to start with her at all.  I carried Della to the track when it was our turn.  I put her down and she turned all around and just waited for an opportunity to escape.  Fortunately Della did not see Pasi anywhere so that's probably why she decided it's safer to come with me instead of running into an unknown crowd.  This was Della's and my personal victory!  We stuck together and got things to work though the situation was very stressful.  We crossed the finish line with only one fault, a stupid refusal due to a bit too careless handling from my side.  Still I felt like a winner!  Della and I got two results out of three competitions and we came in eighth and fifth.  No clean runs but again a growing hunger for making one. 

Pasi competed with Taika on Sunday and it's always a joy to see them performing.  Taika did well though the two agility competitions ended up in disqualifications and the hunt for Taika's last agility certificate continues.  The crown of the day and of a great weekend was Taika's third competition, which was a jumping competition.  Pasi and Taika made a clean run and were placed ninth among thirty competitors. 

A great ending of a marvellous weekend!  I would very much like to visit and compete in Kuopio again.  The competitions were very well organized, we met with so many friendly people and last but not least - we met with Laura and Kuura's brother, the handsome Aarre (Länsimetsän Syysaamun Aarre).  Kuura showed her affection for her brother by giving him a broad smile and a taste of her teeth.  Aarre didn't seem to care much for his sister's behaviour.  Aarre is too much of a gentleman and the spitting image of his father, Tero (Shandy's Line of Fire).  A real beauty with the same vocal powers as his sister.

En ole ennen käynyt Itä-Suomessa ja kun Pasi sai asiakkaaltaan kutsun käydä Kuopiossa, en epäröinyt ottaa vapaata ja lähteä mukaan.  Olimme tietysti katselleet agilityn kisakalenteria jos sillä suunnalla olisi ollut agilitykisoja samaan aikaan.  Tiesimme toki niin paljon, että valmentajamme Reetta Pirttikoski tuomaroisi Kuopiossa Hukka-Putki ry:n (Hu-Pu) kisoissa samana viikonloppuna.

Reetta rohkaisi lähtemään mukaan ja kun hän samalla kertoi kisojen olevan lämpimässä hallissa, jossa voi kisata talvellakin T-paidalla, minun laukku oli välittömästi pakattu.  Vihaan kisata kun on kylmä!

Ajoimme 450 km asiakastapaamiseen ja kioihin.  Olemme varmaan hieman hulluja, mutta mitä siitä!  Elät vain kerran - ja miten hauskaa meillä oli!  Sisähalli oli aivan mahtava! Halli oli todella lämmin keinonurmipohjainen ja pidin siitä todella.

Valitettavasti Della ei pitänyt hallista ollenkaan.  Della on treenannut niin hyvin viime aikoina, että olin jo miltei unohtanut miten suuria ongelmia Dellalla on ollut paikassa jossa on paljon koiria, ihmisiä ja melua.  Muutama viikko sitten meidän toko-kouluttajamme kertoi koirien ongelmista ja miten helposti ne stressaantuessaan ongelmatilanteissa palaavat vanhaan, ei toivottuun, käytökseen.  Juuri tämä tapahtui nyt ja ilman varoitusta.  Della ei nähnyt tai kuullut minua.  Della oli kuin sähköankerias taluttimessa pyörine vain ympäri.  Tiesin, että minun pitää pysyä rauhallisena.  Käytin naksutinta, jota aina pidän mukanani, yrittäen saada Dellan tekemään erilaisia "meidän temppuja" kun tällaista tapahtuu. 

Minulla ja Dellalla oli kolme kisaa lauantaina ja olin aivan varma, etten pystyisi starttaamaan Dellan kanssa ollenkaan.  Kannoin Dellan radalle kun meidän vuoro tuli startata.  Laskin Dellan maahan ja se kääntyi heti ympäri ja odotti tilaisuutta paeta.  Onneksi Della ei nähnyt Pasia ja luultavasti siksi se katsoi turvallisemmaksi seurata minua kuin karata vieraiden ihmisten joukkoon.  Tämä oli minun ja Dellan henkilökohtainen voitto!  Starttasimme ja saimme asiat toimimaan yhdessä vaikka tilanne oli erittäin stressaava.  Ylitimme maalilinjan vain 5 virhepisteellä, typerä kielto minun hieman huolimattoman ohjauksen takia.  Silti olo oli kuin voittajalla!  Della ja minä saimme kaksi tulosta kolmesta kisasta ja sijoituksemme oli kahdeksas ja viides.  Ei puhdasta rataa tälläkään kertaa, mutta nälkä sen tekemiseen kasvoi.

Pasi ja Taika kisasivat sunnuntaina ja heidän suoritustaan on aina mukava seurata.  Taika suoriutui hyvin vaikka molemmat agilitykisat päätyivätkin hylkäykseen ja viimeisen agilitysertifikaatin metsästys jatkuu.  Päivän ja koko viikonlopun kruunasi Taikan kolmas kisa, joka oli hyppyrata.  Pasi ja Taika tekivät puhtaan radan ja sijoitus oli yhdeksäs kolmestakymmenestä osallistujasta.  

Hieno loppu mahtavaan viikonloppuun!  Tahdon käydä ja kisata Kuopiossa uudelleen.  Kisat olivat hyvin järjestetyt, tapasimme niin paljon ystävällisiä ihmisiä ja kaiken lisäksi - tapasimme Lauran ja Kuuran komean veljen, Aarteen (Länsimetsän Syysaamun Aarre).  Kuura osoitti kiintymystään veljelleen hymyilemällä kauniisti ja näykäisemällä.  Aarre ei juuri välittänyt siskonsa käytöksestä.  Aarre on vain niin hieno herrasmies ja täydellinen kopio isästään, Tero (Shandy's Line of Fire).  Upean näköinen poika ja samanlaiset äänenvoimakkuudet kuin siskolla.

15.02. Match-Show, RKS

Last Sunday we went for a non-official dog show event.  We really need to practise for the official dog shows we're going to attend later on this year and a match-show is a great place to get useful show experiences.

There were about hundred dogs of different ages and breeds taking part of the show.  Kuura was to attend the same class as Della for the first time, the class for small adult dogs.  Unlike an official dog show you usually only have two classes at a non-official show, a puppy class and a class for adult dogs.  Dogs older than twelve months are to compete in the class for adult dogs.  Kuura has turned 16 months so she was to play in the league for grown-ups.

The judge for small dogs was very thorough and after having checked all the dogs in the class, she rewarded Della with the blue ribbon and Kuura with the red one.  At a non-official show you compete in pairs and the dog that pleases the judge the most, gets the red ribbon.

In the final for the small dogs with blue ribbons Della did very well and she came in third.  I was very satisfied with Della's behaviour both when the judge examined her on the show table and how she moved in the ring.

Kuura really surprised me by behaving very well.  She stayed calm and moved beautifully without the jumping and barking we've got used to.  It felt like Kuura had grown up all of a sudden and it was a pleasure to see her and Pasi in the ring.  They did such a fine job that the judge put them first among the dogs with red ribbons!  The win meant that Kuura got to compete for the Best in Show-title in the end of the day.

There were eight dogs altogether in the final settlement, the blue and red ribbon winners of puppies small and large and the blue and red group winners of the adult dogs, also small and large.  Again Pasi made a great job showing Kuura and our lovely Lady Grey charmed the two judges completely.  She even made it so well she won the whole competition and we got our first Best in Show-dog ever!  What a day!

Viime sunnuntaina kävimme Match-Showssa.  Meidän täytyy harjoitella ennen virallisia näyttelyitä joihin aiomme osallistua myöhemmin tänä vuonna ja Match-Show on loistava tilaisuus hankkia näyttelykokemusta.

Match-Showhun osallistui noin sata eri ikäistä ja rotuista koiraa.  Kuura osallistui ensimmäistä kertaa samaan luokkaan kuin Della, aikuiset pienet koirat.  Virallisista näyttelyistä poiketen Match-Showssa on yleensä vain kaksi luokkaa, pentuluokka ja aikuisten luokka.  Yli 12 kuukautta vanhat koirat kisaavat aikuisten luokassa.  Koska Kuura on täyttänyt jo 16 kk kisasi se aikuisten luokassa.

Tuomari oli erittäin perusteellinen ja arvosteltuaan kaikki pienet koirat, Della oli saanut sinisen nauhan ja Kuura punaisen nauhan.  Match-Showssa arvostellaan parettain ja eniten tuomaria miellyttävä saa punaisen nauhan.

Sinisten nauhan saaneiden finaalissa Della menestyi hyvin ja sijoittui kolmanneksi.  Olin erittäin tyytyväinen niin Dellan käyttäytymiseen pöydällä tuomarin arvostellessa sen kuin sen liikkumiseen kehässä.

Kuura yllätti minut täysin hyvällä käytöksellään.  Kuura käyttäytyi rauhallisesti ja liikkui kauniisti eikä haukkunut ja hyppinyt niinkuin olemme tottuneet sen tekevän.  Tuntui kuin Kuura olisi aikuistunut yllättäen ja oli nautinto katso häntä ja Pasia kehässä.  He tekivät hienoa työtä ja tuomari sijoitti parin punaisten ryhmän ensimmäiseksi!  Voitto tiesi pääsyä Best in Showhun päivän päätteksi.

Finaalissa oli kahdeksan koiraa, sinisten ja punaisten ryhmien voittajat seuraavista ryhmistä, isot ja pienet pennut, isot ja pienet aikuiset.  Taas Pasi esitti Kuuran hienosti ja meidän ihana Harmaa Lady hurmasi tuomarit täysin. Kuura teki sen niin hyvin, että voitti meidän ensimmäisen Best in Shown koskaan. Mikä päivä!

Winter at last / Vihdoinkin talvi

During last weekend we probably got all the snow that's been meant for the whole season.  The world has changed into a soft looking landscape of cotton.  The trees are covered with really thick layers of snow and the branches are hanging like they were fixed, like giant arms grasping for the ground.  Nature is like picked from a fairy-tale, it's almost unreal but at the same time stunning.  If we could get a glimpse of the sun too, everything would be just perfect.

I really tried to get some pictures of our dogs playing in the snow, but it was an attempt in vain.  All our girls were of the same opinion - the snow was just too much and too deep this time!

Karvaiset kaverit helmikuussa.

Viime viikonloppuna satoi luultavasti koko talven lumet yhdellä kertaa.  Maisema näyttää kuin se olisi peitetty pehmeällä pumpulilla.  Puut ovat paksun lumen peitossa ja oksat roikkuvat alas liikkumattomina ja näyttää kuin jättiläisen kädet kurottaisivat maahan.  Luonto on kuin sadusta, se on melkein epätodellinen ja samalla hämmästyttävä.  Vielä kun näkisi häivähdyksen auringosta, kaikki olisi täydellistä.

Yritin todella kovasti saada kuvia koiristamme leikimässä lumessa, mutta yritys oli täysin turha.  Kaikki tytöt olivat samaa mieltä - lunta oli liikaa ja aivan liian syvää tällä kertaa!
