I have thought a lot lately...

Agility, or any kind of working with your dog in general, should be fun.  Even when you don't achieve the results you had expected from competitions or training.  The dog is not a machine, nor are you.  We make mistakes, we learn from them - and, the best of all, we grow with the things we learn.  It's just the way things work.  It's also a fact that some of us will succeed easier or have better opportunities than others and it's great if we could find joy in their success too and not just envy.  Envy is a poison and it eats you from inside.  I know because I've been there myself - too many times...

After Pinja left, I had a really hard time.  First it was the loss itself.  It hurt for a very long time and it still returns from time to time...  Pinja was the dog of my life but Della is my lifesaver.  She made me go on and with the quite fresh co-operation we had back in 2012, everything felt good.  Then the agility setbacks came.  Della stopped jumping, passed obstacles, did not climb and sometimes left the course or even worse, Della would just stop and do nothing.  My pressure increased.  I should be able to handle these things.  I had been competing in the highest class in agility for many years with no other education than what our club had offered me, which was great in 2003.  Nowadays we train and get so much new information about handling all the time that it sometimes feels it's just too much.  I'm not twenty anymore, perhaps it's why I'm feeling the way I do...  I won't say I'm old though.

Olen viime aikoina miettinyt aika paljon...

Agility, tai mikä tahansa harrastaminen koirasi kanssa yleensä, pitäisi olla hauskaa.  Silloinkin kun ei saavuta haluttuja tuloksia kilpailuissa tai harjoituksissa.  Koira ei ole kone, etkä sinäkään.  Teemme virheitä, opimme niistä - ja, parasta kaikessa, kasvamme kaikesta oppimastamme.  Juuri niin se tomii.  On myös fakta, että toiset meistä onnistumme aina helpommin tai on paremmat mahdollisuudet kuin toisilla ja olisi hieno jos osaisimme iloita siitä eikä kadehtia.  Kateus on myrkky, joka syö meitä sisältä.  Tiedän, koska olen kokenut sen - aivan liian monta kertaa...

Pinjan poismenon jälkeen, minulla on ollut todella vaikeaa.  Ensin oli itse menettäminen.  Se koski todella kauan ja tunne palaa vieläkin silloin tällöin...  Pinja oli elämäni koira mutta Della on minun hengenpelastajani.  Della sai minut jatkamaan ja meidän melko tuore yhetystyö vuodesta 2012 lähtien, tuntui hyvältä.  Sitten tuli agilityn takaiskut.  Della lopetti hyppäämisen, kieltäytyi esteistä, ei kivennyt ja joskus poistui radalta tai, mikä vielä pahempaa, jähmettyi radalle.  Paineeni kasvoi.  Minun pitäisi osata käsitellä näitä asioita.  Olin kisannut monta vuotta agilityn korkeimassa luokassa sillä opilla mitä olin saanut seurastamme mikä oli hienoa vuonna 2003.  Nyt harjoitelemme ja saamme niin paljon uutta tietoa ohjaamisesta kaiken aikaa, että joskus tuntuu sitä on liikaa.  En ole enää kaksikymmentä, ehkä sen takia tunnen välillä näin...  En kuitenkaan sano, että olen vanha.

Della was a very open and social dog in the beginning, but a few very sad experiences changed her.  Among other things Della's been attacked by a bigger dog twice during training and still being an inexperienced youngster, Della was forced to jump 30 cm high obstacles.  I refused, but the coach I trained for back then, told me that I won't have a future in agility if I have a dog that cannot jump obstacles with the height being used in agility competitions for Class 3.  Della stumbled, she brought the obstacle down and wrote the first line in our book of troubles...

Today I know so much better what to do when training a young dog.  First come technique and when it works, speed and challenges will be increased.  The goal is to get a dog that's self-confident.  The work mending a dog's mind takes so much time and patience, not to mention mending the handler' mind...  Every day I'm struggling with Della's lack of self-confidence but after having got help from professional trainers in both agility and obedience, I also see the progress and the changes that have happened.  They are not overwhelming but we're getting there.

Dealing with the problems I have with Della, has taught me a lot.  A better teacher than Della is hard to find.  I really have to work with her, nothing is for granted.  Della makes me laugh a lot and also cry but the only thing that matters is that I love her though Della never will become the agility star I once dreamed of.  Della is not a thing I will throw away, because things haven't gone the way I planned.  I will continue competing with Della, have fun with her, succeed and not succeed - and, we'll do it our way!  It can perhaps be a bit old-fashioned at times, but who cares.  It's agility!

Della oli alussa erittäin avoin ja sosiaalinen koira, mutta muutama todella ikävä kokemus muutti sen.  Muun muassa Dellaan kimppuun on hyökännyt kaksi kertaa isompi koira ja lisäksi nuorena kokemattomana koirana Della pakotettiin hyppäämään 30 cm:in esteitä.  Minä vastustin, mutta silloinen kouluttaja sanoi, ettei meillä olisi tulevaisuutta agilityssä jos ei koirani pystyisi hyppäämään agilityn kolmosluokan korkeuden esteitä.  Della kompuroi, pudotti riman ja kirjoitti ensimmäisen rivin ongelmien kirjaamme...

Tänään tiedän niin paljon paremmin miten kouluttaa nuorta koiraa.  Ensin tulee tekniikka ja kun se toimii, lisätään vauhtia ja haastavuutta.  Tavoite on saada koira, jolla on itseluottamusta.  Koiran mielen korjaaminen vie niin paljon aikaa ja kärsivällisyyttä, puhumattakaan ohjaajan mielen korjaamisesta...  Jokainen päivä kamppailen Dellan itseluottamuksen puutteen kanssa mutta saatuani apua ammattilaisilta niin agilityssä kuin tottelevaisuudessa, huomaan myös kehityksen ja muutokset jotka ovat tapahtuneet.  Ne eivät ole valtavia, mutta olemme oikealla tiellä.

Dellan ongelmien kanssa kamppailu on opettanut minulle paljon.  Parempaa opettajaa kuin Della on vaikea löytää.  Minun todella täytyy tehdä töitä hänen kanssa, mikään ei ole itsestään selvää.  Della saa minut usein nauramaan mutta myös itkemään, mutta lopuksi ainut asia millä on merkitystä on, että rakastan Dellaa vaikkei hänestä tulisi sitä agility tähteä mistä kerran haaveilin.  Della ei ole mitään mikä heitetään pois, kun asiat eivät ole menneet kuten olen suunnitellut.  Jatkan Dellan kanssa kisaamista, pidämme hauskaa, onnistumme tai emme - ja, temme sen meidän tavalla!  Se voi ehkä välillä näyttää  vähän vanhanaikaiselta, mutta sama se.  Se on agilityä!
 

18.05. Rauma Show

An interesting day.  Kuura has attended her first official dog show ever and, of course, we were excited.  The place for the show was the sports ground of Lähdepelto in Raumo.  Summer also hit us this weekend with clear-blue skies and lovely temperatures.

Kuura attended the Puppy Class for puppies 7-9 months old.  Altogether there were three bitches in the class, no male puppies at all.  Della also took part in today's show in the Open Class for bitches, where there were eight participants.  The judge was Svante Frisk from Sweden, a very thorough but nice gentleman.  He was very sparing of sharing the red ribbons (EXC) and in Della's class only three bitches were judged excellent.

Kuura also got to meet with her parents, Mila and Tero.  Mila was again a bit bothered having to put up with her grey madcap pup again, Tero took it just easy.  Tero is such a lovely gentleman and he doesn't seem to mind very much about "crazy" offsprings.

Kuura's evaluation:

"A bit long in proportions.  Long head.  Nice eyes and ears.  Scissors bite.  A bit short neck.  Good back.  Good angulations behind.  Straight in front.  Needs more depth in chest.  Moves typically.  Front-leg movements a bit high.  Back could be firmer.  Colour of coat dark."

Result:  3rd place

Della's evaluation:

"Could have longer proportions.  Elegant head with enough intensity.  Eyes could be darker and more almond-shaped.  Good ears.  Distinct stop.  Scissors bite.  Short neck.  Good back.  Sloping loins.  Tight tail.  A bit forward in shoulders.  Chest could be deeper.  Moves widely in front, typically behind.  Good drive in side movement.  Coat could be a bit rougher.  Pleasant temper."

Result:  Open Class / Very Good (VG)

We're very satisfied with the day.

Päivä on ollut mielenkiintoinen.  Kuura osallistui ensimmäiseen viralliseen koiranäyttelyyn, ja tietysti jännitimme.  Paikka oli Lähdepellon Urheilualue Raumalla.  Myös kesä saapui tänä viikonloppuna, sininen taivas ja ihana lämpö.

Kuura osallistui Pentuluokkaan, 7-9 kuukauden ikäisille pennuille.  Luokassa oli kolme narttua, eikä yhtään urospentua.  Myös Della otti osaa narttujen Avoimeen Luokkaan, jossa oli kahdeksan osallistujaa.  Tuomari oli Svante Frisk Ruotsista, todella perusteellinen ja tiukka mutta mukava herrasmies.  Hän oli erittäin säästeliäs punaisten nauhojen (ERI) kanssa ja Dellan luokassa vain kolme narttua sai arvostelun erinomainen.

Kuura tapasi myös vanhempansa, Milan ja Teron.  Mila oli taas hiukan vaivautunut nähdessään hullun harmaan pentunsa, Tero otti asian rauhallisesti.  Tero on niin ihana herrasmies ja eikä juuri välitä villeistä jälkeläisistä.

Kuuran arvostelu:

"Hieman liian pitkä mittasuhteiltaan.  Pitkä pää.  Hyvät silmät ja korvat.  Leikkaava purenta.  Hieman lyhyt kaula.  Hyvä selkä.  Hyvät kulmaukset takana.  Suora edestä.  Tarvitse lisää syvyyttä rintaan.  Liikkuu tyypilliesti.  Etujalkojen liike hieman korkea.  Selkä voisi olla jäykempi.  Turkin väri tumma."

Tulos:  3. sija

"Voisi olla pidempi mittasuhteiltaan.  Tyylikäs pää, riittävän voimakas.  Silmät voisivat olla tummemmat ja enemmän mantelin muotoiset.  Hyvät korvat.  Selkeä stoppi.  Leikkaava purenta.  Lyhyt kaula.  Hyvä selkä.  Laskeva lantio.  Jännitynyt häntä.  Hieman eteen työntyvät olkapäät.  Rintakehä voisi olla syvempi.  Liike edestä leveähkö, takaa tyypillinen.  Eteenpäin vievä liike sivulta.  Turkki voisi olla karkeampi.  Miellyttävä luonne."

10.-11.05. Zorro Cup, Jomala, Åland

For me our annual trip to the Åland Islands and the Zorro Cup competitions in Torp in May is one of the absolute high-lights during our agility year.  The place is idyllic with friendly people and a top spirit!

I also had a lot at stake, because Della was competing for the first time after our set-back in January with three competitions and no other results than DISQ...  The primary goal this time was to have a dog performing with joy and energy, I should just ignore the results.  It's not an easy thing for me being very competitive.  Since Della has trained very well I had expectations, but very careful ones.

Minulla oli myös paljon pelissä, koska Della kisasi ensimmäistä kertaa sitten tammikuun kolmen kisaan jälkeen jossa tuloksena oli yhtä monta hylkyä...  Tavoite oli saada koiraa menemään iloisesti ja reippaasti, ilman tulos tavoitetta.  Se ei ole helppoa koska olen erittäin kilpailuhenkinen.  Koska Della on toiminut harjoituksissa hyvin oli minulla kuitenkin pieniä odotuksia.

We had three competitions on Saturday and two on Sunday.  The judge for the weekend was Marjo Heino, who had planned fun and fast tracks.  Della worked well on Saturday though we were disqualified due to having performed wrong obstacles on each one of the tracks.  It made me a bit sad after all, because I know we can do so much better.  I just had to pick the good pieces and enjoy the fact that I have a dog that performs and not, as before, leaves the track or remains standing unable to continue.  The see-saw Della performed as picked from the school-book.  It's just excellent!  Other very positive things were no weave pole problems or contact faults and enough speed, which made handler deal with quite pleasant problems.

Sunday was "crazy day" and Della worked too efficiently by taking some of the obstacles two or three times.  What I wanted was totally ignored and the audience got its share of laughs...  Five competitions during two days meant five disqualifications and I felt my hair turning more and more grey...

Meillä oli kolme kisaa lauantaina ja kaksi sunnuntaina.  Tuomari toimi koko viikonlopun Marjo Heino, joka oli suunnitellut hauskat ja nopeat radat.  Della toimi lauantaina hyvin vaikka tuloksena olikin hylyt sen valitessa väärän esteen joka kisassa.  Olin siitä hieman surullinen, koska tiesin meidän pystyvän paljon parempaan.  Minun piti vain huomata ne hyvät asiat ja nauttia siitä tosiasiasta, että koira joka ennen lähti radalta tai pysähtyi pystymättä jatkamaan, teki nyt hienoja suorituksia.  Keinun Della suoritti kuin suoraan oppikirjasta.  Aivan täydellisesti!  Muita todella positiivisia asioita oli pujottelu, hyvät kontaktit ja hyvä vauhti, joka aiheutti ohjaajalle miellyttäviä ongelmia.

Sunnuntai oli "hullu päivä" ja Della toimi ylitehokkaasti ottamalla muutamat esteet pariin kolmeen kertaan.  Sitä ei Della huomioinut mitä minä halusin radalla tehtävän ja yleisö sai jakaa mukavat naurut...  Viisi kisaa, viisi hylkyä kahteen päivään ja tunsin hiusteni todella harmaantuvan...

We're just not ready yet for leaving Class 2 and our training will continue.  Though I know, we've made great progress I can't help feeling sad.  I'm so thankful for the support I got from our very good friends Anne and Janita, who had joined us to the Åland Islands from our club this time.  They really have kicked some healthy common sense into me at the darkest of times.  I also really appreciate the unbelievable support I got from agility friends and strangers when I got some very unpleasant feedback from unexpected quarters on Sunday.  It really hurt because I'm trying to get things to work by putting money and lots of training into what I love the most - agility and my dog.  Della is not perfect, I'm not perfect but we're working on our problems all the time.  We're trying to get better but it takes time and most important, Della is not Pinja!  Therefore, I don't need to hear criticism that devastates me, constructive criticism on the other hand is always welcome!  I don't know how I will ever be able to thank you all that helped me make a dark Sunday so much brighter.  Wow!

Me emme ole valmiita jättämään 2 Luokka ja harjoittelu jatkuu.  Vaikka tiedän meidän kehittyneen paljon en voi sille mitään, että olen hieman surullinen.  Olen todella kiitollinen siitä kannustuksesta jota sain hyviltä ystäviltäni Annelta ja Janitalta, jotka olivat täällä kertaa myös mukana seurastamme Ahvenanmaalla.  He todella puhuivat minulle järkeä ja kannustivat synkimpinä hetkinä.  Olen myös todella kiitollinen siitä uskomattomasta tuesta jota sain kaikilta agility-ystäviltä ja vierailta ihmisiltä saadessaani epämiellyttävää kritiikkiä odottamattomalta suunnalta sunnuntaina.  Se todella satutti koska olen yrittänyt saada asiat toimimaan uhraamalla paljon aikaa ja rahaa asioihin joita rakastan kaikkein eniten - agilityä ja koiraani!  Della ei ole täydellinen, ja minäkään ole täydellinen, mutta teemme koko ajan töitä ongelmien ratkaisemisiksi.  Yritämme tulla paremmiksi, mutta se vie aikaa ja tärkeinta on muistaa Della ei ole Pinja!  Siksi minun ei tarvitse kuulla kritiikkiä joka todella loukkaa, toisaalta rakentava kritiikki on aina tervetullutta.  En tiedä miten voin koskaan kiittää tarpeeksi kaikkia teitä jotka teitte synkästä sunnuntaista niin paljon valoisamman.  Hienoa!

Taika and Pasi are dealing with other problems such as Taika's false starts and lack of contacts...  It's great to see Taika's love for agility and her speed while competing.  Pasi has got nice problems to deal with and his weekend's outcome wasn't bad at all.  He came up sixth and seventh in two of his five competitions, three ended up in disqualifications.  Pasi had easy to smile because the sixth place also meant a clean run.

Taika ja Pasi kamppailevat muiden ongelmien kanssa, kuten varaslähdöt ja kontaktit...  On hieno katsoa miten Taika pitää agilitystä ja sen vauhdista radalla.  Pasilla on miellyttäviä ongelmia ja saavutukset eivät olleet ollenkaan huonoja.  He sijoittuivat 6. ja 7. kahdessa viidestä kisasta, kolme kisaa päättyi hylkyyn.  Pasin oli helppo hymyillä koska kuudes sija oli myös puhdas nolla rata.

Kuura has behaved so very well all the time.  She's been on her first boat trip ever and was calm and quiet in the cabin though there were all kinds of noise coming through the cabin door all the time.  We also avoided ticks though the Åland Islands are known for them.  My believe in garlic is stronger than ever and I have also introduced Kuura to this marvellous flavour of nature's own antibiotic.

Kuura käyttäytyi todella hienosti koko ajan.  Kuura teki ensimmäisen laivamatkansa ja käyttäytyi rauhallisesti ja oli hiljaa vaikka hytin oven takana kuului monenlaisia ääniä.  Vältyimme myös punkeilta, niitä on runsaasti Ahvenanmaalla.  Uskon yhä enemmän valkosipulin tehoon ja myös Kuura on saanut tutustua luonnon omaan ihmeelliseen antibiottiin.

Thank you once again, Anne and Janita, for great travel company!  A big thank you to ÅBSK too for great competitions!  We'll be back again next year!

03.05.-04.05. Harjavalta Group Show FCI 1 & 2

We've had an interesting weekend.  We lived four seasons during two days!  Saturday came with sunny but a bit windy weather, Sunday showed up with grey skies and in the afternoon rain that turned into showers of hail and snow!  That's not exactly the weather you expect in the month of May...

At the same time our annual Group Dog Show took place at our club in Harjavalta, where we had five judges from different parts of Europe judging over 850 dogs for two days.  Our show rings are always outdoors so the weather was not a hit this year...

Della participated in the show on Saturday so we were lucky.  We could enjoy the sun though the wind was cold.  Della competed in the Open Class and they were altogether 26 bitches in the class.  The judge for the day was Suncica Lazic from Serbia.  A young woman with a friendly and calm approach and for once Della was quite relaxed on the show table.  It was our win for the day!

Della was judged EXC (Excellent) and I was more than satisfied, because the competition was tough and there were some really good bitches in the class.  Below Ms. Suncica Lazic's report on Della:

"Good size.  Typical head.  Good expression.  Ears set and carried correct.  Correct top- and underline.  Tail set and carried correct.  Parallel position of legs.  Correct angulations.  A bit close in elbows.  Free movement.  Coat of good colour and quality."

Though our annual group dog show demands a lot of hard work for many people for many months in advance as well as during the weekend for the show, it's really worth it!  We have such a good team involved and experienced members of the club that help us out every year.  You're all such gems!  It also felt great to see some new faces in the show crew this year!  A really big thank you to all of You!  Without your contribution this wouldn't work.

Meillä on ollut mielenkiintoinen viikonloppu.  Kahtena päivänä koimme neljä vuodenaikaa!  Lauantai oli aurinkoinen mutta vähän tuulinen kun taas sunnuntai tarjosi harmaita pilviä ja iltapäivän aikana vielä sadetta, joka muuttui ensin rakeiksi ja sitten lumeksi.  Se ei ole juuri säätä mitä odotat toukokuussa...

Meillä oli Harjavallassa juuri tänä viikonloppuna vuosittain järjestettävä kaksi päiväinen ryhmänäyttely, jossa tuomareita oli viidestä Euroopan maasta ja koiria yli 850.  Kehämme ovat aina ulkona joten sää ei juuri suosinut tänä vuonna.

Della osallistui näyttelyyn lauantaina joten meillä oli onnea.  Saimme nauttia auringosta vaikka tuuli puhalsikin kylmästi.  Della osallistui avoimeen luokkaan jossa oli kaikkiaan 26 narttua.  Tuomarina oli Suncica Lazic Serbiasta.  Nuori ystävällinen ja rauhallinen nainen ja kerrankin Della oli melko rento näyttelypöydällä.  Se oli meidän päivän voitto!

Della sai ERI:n (Erinomainen) ja olin enemmän kuin tyytyväinen, koska luokassa oli joitakin todella hienoja narttuja.  Alla Suncica Lazicin arvostelu Dellasta:

"Hyvä koko.  Tyypillinen pää.  Hyvä ilme.  Korvat hyvin asettuneet ja kannetut.  Oikeanlainen ylä- ja alalinja.  Häntä hyvin asettunut ja kannettu.  Samansuuntainen jalkojen asento.  Oikeat kulmaukset.   Hieman kapeat kyynärpäät.  Vapaat liikkeet.  Turkki hyvän värinen ja laatuinen."

Vaikka vuosittainen ryhmänäyttely vaati paljon kovaa työtä monen kuukauden ajan monelta ihmiseltä kuten myös koko näyttelyviikonloppuna, on se kaiken sen arvoista!  Meillä on niin hyvä ja kokenut tiimi seurassa tekemässä tätä joka vuosi.  Olette kaikki todellisia helmiä!  Tänä vuonna oli myös hieno nähdä uusia kasvoja mukana joukossa!  Todella iso kiitos Teille!  Ilman panostanne tämä ei onnistuisi.
