16.-17.05. ÅBSK, Torp

There's no real spring without competing in agility in the Åland Islands with our friends and taking part of the annual Zorro Cup.  For me our trip to Åland is one of the absolute highlights of the year.  I get to meet with friends and to enjoy speaking my native language.  The Åland Islands are situated in the beautiful archipelago between Finland and Sweden and visiting Åland is a bit like coming home for me.

Though these spring competitions arranged by Ålands Bruks- och Sällskapshundklubb rf (ÅBSK) always will remind me of the loss of Pinja in 2012, I just can't stay away.  The place where the competitions are held is like picked from a travel magazine, it's idyllic, the feeling during the whole weekend is relaxed, the spirit is high and the people friendly.  We've made so many precious friends during our Åland trips and last but not least - Della's career as an agility dog started here with a win.

Since then it has taken me three years of hard work to get Della through the classes in agility.  We've struggled with almost everything due to Della's lack of self-confidence, but it's been worth every battle.  I have learnt so much about myself, my dog and how important it is to never give up if you have faith in something.  Though I have had my serious doubts at times, my love for Della and the knowledge of her hidden capacity have given me the strength to continue.  Della has taught me to be humble and rejoice for things that may seem quite insignificant to others.  I am also lucky to be surrounded with priceless friends and among them two outstanding coaches, Kati Häkli (obedience) and Reetta Pirttikoski (agility).  Without all these great people and their amazing unflagging support I would never have achieved what I have today - a dog that puts up with different kinds of pressure and a handler that got faith in herself.

On Sunday, May 17th, Della made a clean run on a course designed by judge Jari Helin.  She made it so well that we won the competition and our personal success was a fact; Della had made her last start in Class 2, she got her longed for certificate and the right to compete in the highest class in agility, Class 3.  There are not enough words for for my joy nor my gratitude.  From the very bottom of my heart to all of our dear supporters - THANK YOU!

Taika and Pasi also competed during the weekend, but unfortunately Taika was not at her very best so Pasi chose to take it easy with her and cancelled three of Taika's five competitions.

Kiitos, Sinikka, näistä ihanista koirista!

Ei ole kevättä ilman jokavuotisia Zorro Cupin agilitykisoja ja ystäviä Ahvenanmaalla.  Ahvennmaan matka on minulle vuoden kohokohta.  Saan tavata ystäviäni ja puhua äidinkieltäni.  Ahvenanmaa sijaitsee kauniissa saaristossa Suomen ja Ruotsin välissä ja siellä käynti on minulle kuin tulisin kotiin.

Vaikka nämä ÅBSK:n järjestämät kisat muistuttavat aina minua Pinjan poismenosta 2012, en voi jättää niitä väliin.  Paikka missä kisat pidetään on kuin matkaesitteestä, se on idyllinen ja koko viikonlopun tunnelma on rento ja ystävällinen.  Olemme saaneet niin paljon hienoja ystäviä Ahvenanmaalta ja eikä vähiten, Dellan kisaura on alkanut siellä voitolla.

On vienyt kolme kovaa työntäytteistä vuotta saada Della kolmosiin.  Olemme taistelleet kaikesta Dellan huonon itseluottamuksen takia, mutta kaikki on ollut sen arvoista.  Olen oppinut niin paljon itsestäni, koirastani ja miten tärkeä on olla luovuttamatta ja uskoa siihen mitä tekee.  Vaikka välillä olen epäillyt, niin Della ja usko hänen kykyihinsä on antanut minulle voimia.  Della on opettanut minulle nöyryyttä ja iloa asioista, jotka muille vaikuttavat vähäpätöisiltä.  Olen myös onnekas, koska minulla on korvaamattomia ystäviä ja kaksi uskomatonta valmentajaa, Kati Häkli (toko) ja Reetta Pirttikoski (agility).  Ilman näitä uskomattomia ystäviä ja valmentajaa ja heidän väsymätöntä tukea, en olisi saavuttanut sitä mitä minulla on tänään - koira joka kestää monenlaisia paineita ja ohjaaja, joka uskoo itseensä.

Sunnuntaina 17. toukokuuta Della suoritti puhtaan radan Jari Helinin tuomaroimana.  Suoritus oli niin hyvä, että voitimme kisan ja teimme viimeisen kakkosluokan startin ja saavutimme viimeisen sertifikaatin ja siirtymisen kolmosluokkaan.  Minulla ei ole riittävästi sanoja osoittaakseni kaikkea sitä iloa ja kiitollisuutta.  Toivotan sydämeni pohjasta kaikille tukijoille - KIITOS!

Taika ja Pasi kisasivat myös viikonlopun aikana, mutta valitettavasti Taika ei ollut iskussa ja Pasi päätti antaa Taikan levätä ja perui kolme starttia viidestä.

09.-10.05. Harjavalta Group Show and Sheltie Specialty Show

Time just flies and again we can look back upon a successfully arranged annual Group Show in Harjavalta.  This year our program also included a Specialty Show for Shelties on Sunday, which meant that you could compete for certificates for two days for your sheltie.  On Saturday we had the normal group show, where the shelties were judged by Lidija Oklescen from Slovenia.  The ring of the Sheltie Specialty Show for bitches on Sunday was hosted by Mrs. Gail E Richardson from Great Britain.

Della and Kuura were attending both shows but without higher expectations of the final outcome.  We have the most wonderful dogs but they are no actual show dogs.  Della's got a bit too round eyes and Kuura was still missing that lovely coat of hers.

I am very proud of Della because she behaved just great.  Della let the judges examine her thoroughly on the table, she did not avoid contact and was much more relaxed than before.  Della was judged VG (Very Good) by both judges but for me it was as good as EXC (Excellent) bearing Della's history in mind.

Kuura got VG from Lidija on Saturday and G (Good) from Gail on Sunday.  Both judges mentioned Kuura's miserable coat condition in their judgement. What would it have been if our Lady Grey had been in coat..?

Mr. Jim H Peach judged the male shelties at the Specialty Show.  Afterwards we heard that his and Mrs. Richardson's overall opinions of Finnish shelties at the Specialty Show, were that our dogs are too big with too big heads.  They did not at all like the mix of American and British shelties, a mix that will eventually destroy the breed.  They also had wished to see dogs in better show condition, many of the shelties had not been groomed enough.

I have always said that attending a dog show is a hard game.  It all depends on what the judge likes or not.  You can't do anything about it though YOU KNOW you have the world's most wonderful dog.

"19 months.  Totally out of coat.  Up to size.  Needs to settle on the table and in the move.  Good ears."

In my opinion, the judgement are quite poor, especially for a specialty show.  I would have liked to see some more text.  The fee for entering a show is after all not the cheapest one.

Aika rientää ja takana on taas hyvin onnistunut jokavuotinen Harjavallan Ryhmänäyttely.  Tänä vuonna ohjelmassa oli myös shelttien erikoisnäyttely sunnuntaina, mikä tarkoitti, että oli mahdollista saavuttaa kaksi serttiä samana viikonloppuna.  Lauantaina meillä oli normaali ryhmänäyttely, jossa sheltit arvosteli Lidija Oklescen Sloveniasta.  Shelttien erikoisnäyttelyssä narttujen kehän arvosteli Rouva Gail E Richardson Iso-Britanniasta.

Sekä Della että Kuura osallistuivat molempiin nättelyihin ilman suurempia odotuksia.  Meillä on aivan ihania koiria, mutta ne eivät ole mitään näyttelykoiria.  Dellalla on hieman liian pyöreät silmät ja Kuura kaipasi kovasti turkkiaan.

Olen todella ylpeä Dellasta, koska se käytäyttyi hienosti.  Tuomarit saivat tutkia häntä huolellisesti pöydällä, Della ei väistänyt ja se oli paljon rennompi kuin aikaisemmin.  Della sai EH (Erittäin Hyvä) molemmilta tuomareilta mutta minusta se oli yhtä hyvä kuin ERI (Erinomainen) Dellan taustaa ajattellen.

Kuura sai EH Lidijalta lauantaina ja H (Hyvä) Gaililta sunnuntaina.  Molempien tuomareiden arvosteluissa luki Kuuran vähäisestä turkista.  Mitä olisikaan ollut jos Lady Greyllä olisikin ollut turkki..?

Herra Jim H Peach arvosteli urossheltit erikoisnäytelyssä.  Myöhemmin saimme kuulla, että hänen ja Rouva Richardsonin yleinen mielipide Suomen shelteistä oli, että koirat ovat liian isoja liian isoilla pääillä.  He eivät ollenkaan pidä amerikkalaisen ja englantilaisen shelttien sekoituksesta, mikä heidän mielestään loppujen lopuksi tuhoa rodun.  He olisivat myöskin toivoneet näkevänsä shelttejä paremmassa näyttelykunnossa, monia ei ollut laitettu riittävästi show kuntoon.

Olen aina sanonut, että näyttely on vaikea laji.  Kaikki riippuu siitä mistä tuomari pitää tai ei pidä.  Sille ei voi mitään vaikka ITSE TIEDÄT, että koirasi on maailman paras.

Minusta olisi ollut kiva saada enemmän tekstiä arvosteluun, eritysesti kun on kyseessä erikoisnäyttely.  Osallistumismaksu on kuitenkin aika kova.

Della got trousers the other day.  Not that it was necessary, because we have not even noticed that Della's been on heat.  There's been no blood stains anywhere.  Della has taken care of everything very well.

If Della has been getting dressed we have an opposite situation with Kuura.  Still a few weeks ago Kuura had a lovely coat.  Today Kuura is definitely not a dog for a dog show, she looks just miserable.  The problem is that we have two shows coming up and the other one is also a Sheltie Specialty Show...  It's not just fair!

Della sai housut muutama päivä sitten.  Ei siksi, että se olisi ollut tarpeellista, koska me emme edes olleet huomanneet, että Dellalla on ollut juoksut.  Emme edes ole nähneet verta missään.  Della on hoitanut kaiken todella hyvin.

Jos Dellalle olisikin tarvinnut pukea housut, Kuuran kanssa on ollut päin vastoin.  Vielä pari viikkoa sitten Kuuralla oli ihana turkki.  Kuurasta ei todellakaan ole koiraa näyttelyyn tällä hetkellä, hän näyttää surkealta.  Ongelmana on, että meillä on kaksi näyttelyä tulossa, joista toinen on vielä shelttien erikoisnäyttely...  Se ei vain ole reilua!

Dellan turkin tilanne on vielä hyvä, mutta kuka tietää huomisesta..?

On heat / Juoksuaika

My plans to compete in obedience on Saturday went completely upside-down, because last Thursday I noticed that Della was on heat.  Though it was a non-official trial, I was quite sad when I had to cancel it.  Della has been training so well lately so it would have been nice to have someone judging our performance.

Instead of obedience we enjoyed a weekend together with agility friends and horses.  We met with friends from our club in Harjavalta on Saturday, where we had our agility course put in order again after winter.  It was really great to meet with everyone after so many months and to catch up with the latest news.

The horses belong to a very good friend of mine, Satu.  She went to see her parents for the weekend and needed someone to take care of her black darlings, Risto and Sara.  Satu also got chickens so we've had the privilege of getting fresh eggs for breakfast.  They really taste great!  They are so different from the ones you get from the grocery.

Thanks Satu!  We had such fun!

Suunnitelmani kisata tottelevaisuudessa lauantaina meni aivan päälaelleen, huomasin torstaina Dellalla alkaneen juoksut.  Vaikka kisa oli epävirallinen, olin melkoisen surullinen kun jouduin peruttamaan sen.  Della on onnistunut harjoituksissa niin hyvin viime aikoina, että olisi ollut mukava saada arvostelu suorituksistamme.

Toko-kisan sijaan saimme nauttia viikonlopusta agility-ystävien ja hevosten kanssa.  Tapasimme ystäviä seuramme kentällä Harjavallassa lauantaina, missä kunnostettiin kenttää talven jäljiltä.  Oli hieno tavata taas kaikki monen kuukauden jälkeen ja vaihtaa viimeiset kuulumiset.

Hevoset ovat hyvän ystäväni Sadun.  Hän lähti tapaamaan vanhempiaan viikonlopuksi ja tarvitsi jonkun hoitamaan mustia silmäteriä Ristoa ja Saraa.  Sadulla on myös kanoja, joten saimme mahdollisuuden tuoreisiin kananmuniin aamiaisella.  Ne maistuivat todella hyviltä!  Ne ovat niin erilaisia kuin kaupan munat.

Easter / Pääsiäinen

We've enjoyed a great Easter holiday together with my family.  They came to see us for three lovely days before my sister had to get back to Sweden to work.  Easter here in Finland is quite similar to Easter in Sweden, that is we are enjoying being together with family and friends, eating a lot of good food and, of course, plenty of candy and chocolate!

When my family comes to see us our dogs are always more than pampered.  This visit made no exception.  Each one of them got a present wrapped in beautiful gift paper.  My sister's two boys had chosen what to buy for our girls and we had a touch of Christmas at Easter time!  Every parcel contained a carefully selected gift for each one of our dogs, a perfect soft toy great for both training and playing.

It's amazing how great impact a small dog can have on us.  It's no secret that I still miss Kelly and Pinja like crazy some days though it will soon be three years since they left us.  The memory of Pinja is like a wound that never seems to heal and it hurts.  Someone once told me that you know mourning has come to an end when you see the one you miss in dreams.  I still haven't seen that dream of Pinja.

Max, my sister's youngest son, is seven years old.  He just loves animals.  At the moment a very own hen is on the top of his "what-I-want-the-most-list".  Second best on the same list is a dog of his own and if it's just possible, a dog like Kelly.

During his Easter holiday Max came to me and told me how much he misses Kelly.  He told me that he thought that Kelly was the sweetest of dogs and how good it felt to be close to her.  Max was only four years old when Kelly died, but still he remembers her like yesterday.

That's what dogs do.  They won't leave us without leaving paw prints in our hearts, some deeper than others.  The pain we feel is just a sign of how much we've loved our faithful friends.  This pain knows nothing about age.  I know, because a little boy told me so.

Della also left her prints at competitions in Turku on Easter Monday.  We had three attempts and all three ended up in disqualifications, good ones.

Pääsiäinen, kiitollisia koiria ja täydelliset lelut.

Vietimme mukavan pääsiäisen perheeni kanssa.  He tulivat meille kolmeksi päiväksi ennen kuin siskoni täytyi palata taas Ruotsiin töihin.  Pääsiäinen täällä Suomessa on melko samanlainen kuin Ruotsissa, eli vietämme aikaa yhdessä perheidemme ja ystäviemme kanssa, syödään hyvin ja siihen kuuluu myös paljon makeisia ja suklaata.

Kuten yleensä kun perheeni tulee, koiramme ovat aina enemmän kuin hemmoteltuja.  Tämä vierailu ei tehnyt poikkeusta.  Jokainen sai kauniseen lahjapaperiin käärityn lahjan.  Siskoni kaksi poikaa olivat valinneet lahjat tytöillemme ja meillä oli kuin joulu pääsiäisenä.  Jokainen paketti sisälsi tarkkaan valitun lahjan, täydellisen pehmolelun leikkeihin ja treeneihin.

On ihmeellistä miten ison vaikutuksen pieni koira saa aikaan.  Ei ole salaisuus, että kaipaan edelleen Kellyä ja Pinjaa kuin hullu miltei joka päivä, vaikka siitä on melkein kolme vuotta kuin he jättivät meidät.  Pinjan muisto on kuin haava, joka ei tunnu paranevan ja se sattuu.  Joku sanoi joskus minulle, että sureminen loppuu kun näkee unta kaipaamastaan.  En ole vielä nähnyt sitä unta Pinjasta.

Max, siskoni nuorin poika, on seitsemän vuotta vanha.  Hän rakastaa eläimiä.  Tällä hetkellä kana on hänen toivelistan kärjessä.  Kakkossijalla on koira ja juuri sellainen kuin Kelly.

Pääsiäisenä Max tuli kertomaan minulle kuinka paljon hän kaipaa Kellyä.  Hän kertoi minulle, että Kelly oli söpöin koira ikinä ja miten hyvältä tuntui olla lähellä Kellyä.  Max oli vain neljä vuotta vanha kun Kelly kuoli, mutta hän muistaa sen kuin eilisen.

Niin koirat tekevät.  Ne eivät jätä meitä ilman tassunjälkiä sydämiimme, jotkut syvempiä kuin toiset.  Se kipu minkä tunnemme, on vain merkki miten paljon rakastimme uskollista ystävää.  Kipu ei tunne ikää.  Tiedän sen nyt, kun pieni poika kertoi sen minulle.

Dellakin jätti jälkensä Pääsiäismaanantain kisoissa Turussa.  Meillä oli kolme yritystä, jotka päättyivät kolmeen hyvään hylkyyn. 

28.03. PAWS, Maalahti

Last Saturday was quite intense from early morning to late evening.  We had decided to go to Maalahti for agility competitions.  Maalahti is situated about two and a half hours by car from where we live so there was no room for anything else that day but the things we love the most - dogs and agility.

I have to admit that it may seem a bit crazy to drive so long only to make a couple of disqualifications.  That's the poor outcome of Della's and my day in Maalahti.  It's probably not even a surprise to most of our readers, because it feels like I am not able to perform a clean run with my dog at all or even get a bad result...  I know it's so wrong to think like this, but I can't help it sometimes.  Della is such a great companion, she's getting more and more brave all the time, she's skillful and I am really enjoying competing with her nowadays,  What I am trying to say is that I think my dog is so worthy a better result than just DISQ.  I hope I will be able to show the world that too one day.

Taika was the joy for the day.  Pasi had three competitions with her and in the last one they came in second.  We're not speaking of the most beautiful performance in their history, but luckily we don't get points for style in agility - yet!

Again the contacts were jumped so Pasi has still some work to do with Taika before we can call her an agility champion.  Time and patience will show.

I was very lucky to meet with some of our blog readers in Maalahti and it made me really happy to hear their thoughts and opinions about Della and the work I have done with her.  I know I have been lousy replying to the lovely the comments I have gotten during the years and I apologize for that.  I just want you to know how much I appreciate every word you write.  Thank you!

The joyful end of a long day.

Iloinen päätös pitkälle päivälle.

Viime lauantai oli melko kiireinen aamusta iltaan.  Olimme päättäneet mennä Maalahteen agilitykisoihin.  Maalahteen on meiltä matkaa noin kaksi ja puoli tuntia autolla, joten sinä päivänä ei jäänyt aikaa millään muulle kuin mitä rakastamme eniten - koirat ja agility.

Minun täytyy tunnustaa, että tuntuu varmasti hullulta ajaa niin pitkä matka kahden hylyn takia.  Dellan ja minun tulos oli aika heikko Maalahdesta.  Se ei varmasti ole yllätys useimmille meidän lukijoille , koska tuntuu siltä, etten osaa tehdä puhdasta rataa enkä edes huonoa tulosta koirani kanssa...  Tiedän, että on väärin ajatella näin, mutta en voi sille mitään, joskus.  Della on niin loistava kisakaveri ja tulee rohkeammaksi koko ajan, hän on taitava ja nautin todella kisaamisesta hänen kanssa nykyään.  Mitä yritän sanoa on, että koirani on paljon enemmän arvoinen kuin hylkääminen.  Toivon pystyväni näyttämään sen myös maailmalle jonain päivänä.

Taika oli päivän ilonaihe.  Pasilla oli kolme kisaa hänen kanssa ja viimeisessä kisassa he sijoittuivat toiseksi.  Emme puhu heidän kauniimmasta suorituksesta aikojen kuluessa, mutta onneksi tyylipisteitä ei jaeta agilityssä - vielä!

Kontaktit jäivät taas ottamatta ja Pasilla on vielä töitä Taikan kanssa ennen agilityvalion saavuttamista.  Annetaan ajan kulua ja paljon kärsivällisyyttä.

Minulla oli ilo tavata joitakin blogini lukijoita Maalahdessa ja olin iloinen kuullessani heidän ajatuksia ja mielipiteitä Dellasta ja siitä työstä mitä olen tehnyt hänen kanssaan.  Pyydän anteeksi, että olen ollut huono vastaamaan kaikkiin ihaniin kommentteihin joita olen saanut vuosien varrella.  Olen todella kiitollinen niistä.  Kiitos!  

Solar eclipse / Auringonpimennys

This is a non-dog-related thing, but I just have to put it to our blog.  We have experienced such an extraordinary week with spectacular natural phenomenons.  First we got to admire the marvellous light show put up by the northern lights.  Seldom we get to see them here where we live, it's a bit too south.  I just love this phenomenon of green light waves moving around high in the night sky.  It's magic.  Unfortunately I have no pictures of it.  So when we were lucky to experience an almost total solar eclipse on Friday, I decided to make an attempt to get a memorable picture of it.  Below you can see the result taken through a welding glass.  I must say I am quite satisfied.

Tämä ei ole koira-aiheinen juttu, mutta minun täytyy vain laittaa se blogiimme.  Olemme kokeneet niin erikoisen viikon luonnon ilmiöitä.  Ensin me ihailimme revontulien mahtavaa valoesitystä.  Näemme niitä täällä harvoin, asumme vähän liian etelässä.  Rakastan todella näitä vihreän valon ilmiöitä, jotka liikkuvat korkealla yötaivaalla.  Se on taikuutta.  Valitettavasti minulla ei ole niistä kuvia.  Koska meillä oli myös onni kokea melkein täydellinen auringonpimennys perjantaina, päätin yrittää ikuista sen kameralla.  Yllä näette lopputuloksen siitä hitsauslasin läpi.  Täytyy sanoa, että olen aika tyytyväinen.
