21.09. Non-official Obedience Trial / TOKO-epiksissä

Last Sunday Della and I took part in a non-official obedience trial arranged by the Western Division of the Finnish Shetland Sheepdog Association.  The trial was held at our club in Harjavalta and we were lucky to probably enjoy one of the last really warm days of the season.

My last memory of a trial in obedience is having a dog that leaves the court because it can't stand the too harsh voice of the judge.  Since then I have worked with Della hoping for being able to compete with her in obedience some time in the future again.  Attending a non-official obedience trial is a great opportunity to test your and your dog's skills before entering an official trial.

We also had the pleasure to meet with Marianne and Rontti.  They had come for the trial too.  Rontti is a lovely black mixed breed "teddy bear", which has been one of Della's so called "therapy friends" at Kontaktikoirat in Pori.  Rontti has helped Della to get back some of the self-confidence Della lost after having been attacked twice by a big black dog during training agility a few years ago.  The dog was kind but young and very playful and the incidents have had a very sad impact on Della.  With Rontti's help Della has learned to put up better with being close to big black dogs, but it's taken time and it still needs continued work.

To share the podium with the team, which had scored the best points for the day (184 points), Marianne and Rontti, felt more than great.  Marianne also knows very well how Della has behaved the first times we trained together, my dog with its tail between its legs.  Last Sunday Della noticed Marianne and went straight towards her with wagging tail...  It really makes me hope for the future!

The trial went very well and we scored 173,5 points out of 200 so I am more than pleased.  Della had fun, I had fun and it got even funnier when I heard that we had come in third.  The judge, Maarit Järvinen, judged us as follows:

Now I have to work on the improvements, that is getting Della even closer to me when she's on and off the leash, see to that Della comes in a more straight position to the side at recall (Della usually does...) and, last but not least, being a good handler to my dog and remember to tell her the orders that should be told...  It usually helps!  Perhaps it's a good thing to attend trials more often so I won't forget what to say or do...

Viime sunnuntaina osallistuimme Dellan kanssa Lännen Sheltit ry:n järjestämään epäviralliseen toko-kokeeseen.  Koe pidettiin seuramme kentällä Harjavallassa ja saimme varmaankin nauttia kesän viimeisestä lämpimästä päivästä.

Viimeinen toko-koemuistoni on kun koirani lähti kentältä ahdistuttuaan tuomarin liian kovasta äänestä.  Tuon jälkeen olemme tehneet töitä Dellan kanssa toivoen, että joskus tulevaisuudessa voisimme vielä kisata tokossa.  Osallistumalla epäviralliseen kokeeseen saa oivan mahdollisuuden testata sekä oman että koiran kykyjä ennen osallistumista viralliseen kokeeseen.

Oli myös kiva tavata Mariannen ja Rontin.  Hekin olivat tulleet kokeeseen.  Rontti on ihana musta x-rotuinen "nalle karhu", joka on ollut yksi Dellan niin sanotuista "terapiakavereista" Kontaktikoirilla Porissa.  Rontti on auttanut Dellaa saaman takaisin osan itseluottamustaan sen jälkeen kun sen kimppuun hyökkäsi kaksi kertaa iso musta koira agilityharjoituksissa muutama vuosi sitten.  Koira oli kiltti, mutta nuori ja leikkisä ja tapauksista jäi Dellalle todella huonot kokemukset.  Rontin avulla Della on oppinut kestämään paremmin isoja mustia koiria vierellään, mutta se on vienyt aikaa ja vaati edelleen jatkuvaa työtä.

Tuntui todella hienolta olla palkintopallilla Mariannen ja Rontin kanssa, jotka tekivät päivän korkeimmat pisteet (184 pistettä).  Marianne tietää myös todella hyvin miten Della käyttäytyi ensimmäisissä yhteisissä treeneissä, häntä koipien välissä...  Viime sunnuntaina Dellan nähdessä Mariannen se meni heti häneen luokseen häntä heiluen...  Se todella antaa toivoa tulevaisuuteen!

Koe meni todella hyvin ja saimme 173,5 pistettä 200:sta, joten olen enemmän kuin tyytyväinen.  Dellalla oli hauskaa, minulla oli hauskaa ja vielä hauskempaa oli kun kuulin, että olimme sijoittuneet kolmanneksi.  Tuomari Maarit Järvinen antoi seuraavat pisteet:

Nyt minun täytyy tehdä töitä parantaakseni muutamia asioita, saada Della kulkemaan lähempänä minua seuraamisissa, saada luoksetulo sivulle suoremmaksi (Della yleensä tulee...) ja vielä muista antaa käskyt koiralleni niin kuin pitäisi...  Se yleensä auttaa paljon!  Ehkä olisi hyvä osallistua useammin toko-kokeisiin, jotten unohtaisi mitä sanoa ja tehdä...

15.-16.09. Birthdays / Syntymäpäiviä

Team Hurrila has been celebrating for two days.  Yesterday Della (Camicats Della) turned 5 years old and today Taika (FI AVA-H Camicats Twister) is enjoying her 9th birthday.  Time really flies!  Sometimes it's almost frightening, because it feels like we're still dealing with a pair of youngsters.  Taika's energy and speed on the agility course is just awesome, but taking a look at her in the mornings...  No signs of false starts then!  Taika is a really sleepyhead, which has to be "kicked" out of bed!  Della, on the contrary, is always ready to go.  Della is the keen little Girl Scout and the leader of our pack.  That Della also has got a lovely smile is a quite well-known fact!

Happy Birthday to two of the most wonderful shelties in the world!  We hope you will stay with us for many years to come yet.  Also, thank you to our very dear friend and breeder Sinikka Sjöqvist for these priceless conquerors of our hearts!

Paljon Onnea Della ja Taika!

Team Hurrila on juhlinut kaksi päivää.  Eilen Della (Camicats Della) täytti viisi vuotta ja tänään Taika (FI AVA-H Camicats Twister) nauttii yhdeksän vuotissyntymäpäivästään.  Aika todella rientää!  Joskus se on melkein pelottavaa, koska tuntuu, että meillä on vieläkin pari nuorukaista.  Taikan energia ja nopeus agilityradalla on niin uskomaton, mutta jos näkisitte sen aamuisin...  Ei mitään varaslähtöjä silloin!  Taika on todellinen unikeko ja se pitää "potkia" pois sängystä!  Della taas on aina valmis lähtöön.  Della on innokas pieni partiotyttö ja myös laumamme johtaja.  Dellalla on myös kaunis ja varsin tunnettu hymy!

Paljon Onnea kahdelle ihanimmalle sheltille maailmassa!  Toivottavasti olette vielä seuranamme monia vuosia.  Kiitos myös todella rakkaalle ystävälle ja kasvattajalle Sinikka Sjöqvistille näistä korvaamattomista sydämenvalloittajista!

13.09. ForPK, Forssa

I really wished for success in agility this weekend, but as dreams wishes do not always come true.  The courses were designed by Leena Rantamäki-Lahtinen (class 1 and 2) and Petteri Kerminen (class 3).  I just loved Leena's courses.  They had such good flow and they were fast, which meant trouble in a positive way.  My wish for Della picking her last certificate turned into a disqualification and a 6th place.  Again we're struggling with weaving problems...

The amount of failures I have had with Della just make me so sad at times.  I know my dog's got capacity, but I don't know if I'm the right handler for Della anymore..?  The outcome's quite weak and we have discussed a change of handler.  I don't know if it's a solution to the problems I'm dealing with, but it's worth a try.  That is, if Della agrees to be handled by Pasi...  Perhaps I'm just suffering from an early stage of fifty-year-crisis..?

My thoughts were abruptly interrupted when Taika's and Pasi's performance got a very unfortunate turn at the fourth obstacle, the see-saw, on their first course for the day.  Taika got off the see-saw, but for some reason her left hind leg got under the see-saw when it beat the ground.  Taika's competition stopped immediately and in front of us we had an unlucky sheltie standing on three legs.

We got absolute outstanding help from the organizer of the competitions (ForPK) and we took off to see the local veterinary with a personal guide driving in front of us showing the way.  What a lovely gesture!  A very nice young female veterinary examined Taika very thoroughly.  Luckily there were no fractures and Taika got painkillers and order to rest.  Now we're keeping an eye on her and if Taika shows any signs of limping, we'll take her for an X-ray on Monday.  Today, Sunday, we have a dog that moves normally and uses all four legs.  This is really better than winning on the lottery!

Once again a really hearty and big THANK YOU(!) to ForPK (Forssan Palveluskoirat ry) for helping us out, for the amazing support we got from everywhere and for the kind reception and thorough treatment at the vet's!

This is not what was supposed to happen...

Näin ei pitänyt tapahtua...

Minä todella odotin menestystä agilitystä tänä viikonloppuna, mutta kuten unessa, toiveet eivät aina toteudu.  Leena Rantamäki-Lahtinen oli suunnitellut ykkös- ja kakkosluokan radat ja Petteri Kerminen kolmosluokan.  Minä todella pidin Leenan radoista.  Ne olivat todella sujuvia ja nopeita, mikä tarkoitti positiivisia ongelmia.  Toiveeni saada Dellan viimeinen sertifikaatti kääntyi hyllyksi ja kuudenneksi sijaksi.  Taistelimme taas pujottelun kanssa...

Virheiden määrä, mikä minulla on Dellan kanssa, tekee minut toisinaan surulliseksi.  Tiedän, että koirallani on kapasiteettia, mutta en tiedä olenko oikea ohjaaja Dellalle..?  Tulokset ovat melko heikkoja ja olemme keskustelleet ohjaajan vaihdoksesta.  En tiedä olisiko se ratkaisu ongelmiin, mutta kannattaa ainakin yrittää.  Sikäli mikäli Della suostuu Pasin ohjaattavaksi...  Ehkä vain kärsin aikaisesta viidenkympinkriisistä..?

Ajatukseni muuttui äkisti kun Taikan ja Pasin suoritus päättyi epäonnistuneesti päivän ensimmäisen radan neljännellä esteellä, keinulla.  Taikan vasen jalka jäi jostain syystä keinun alle sen iskiessä maahan.  Taikan kisa päättyi välittömästi ja edessämme seisoi epäonninen sheltti kolmella jalalla.

Saimme aivan erinomaista apua kisojen järjestäjiltä (ForPK) ja meidät opastettiin paikalliselle eläinlääkärille henkilökohtaisesti edellä ajaen.  Todella hieno ele!  Nuori mukava naiseläinlääkäri tutki Taikan erittäin perusteellisesti.  Onneksi ei löytynyt murtumia ja Taika sai kipulääkkeen ja määräyksen levätä.  Nyt tarkkailemme Taikaa ja jos se alkaa ontumaan viemme sen välittömästi maanantaina röntgeniin.  Tänään, sunnuntaina, meillä on koira joka liikkuu normaalisti ja käyttää neljää tassua.  Tämä on parempaa kuin lottovoitto!

Vielä kerran ISOT SYDÄMELLISET KIITOKSET(!) Forssan Palvelukoirat ry:lle (ForPK) auttamisesta ja ihanasta tuesta kaikilta sekä eläinlääkärin mukavasta vastaanotosta ja perusteellisesta hoidosta!

Kuura the model / Mallikoira Kuura

The local paper Alasatakunta arranged a photo competition during the past summer.  The theme for the competition was to take a picture of the most eye-catching object in your garden.  I got two thoughts at once, it's going to be a picture of our agility course or of our Japanese garden.  These are the two most special things to me.  They bring such joy and make you feel good.  They are both places where I like to spend time.

As a matter of fact it was Kuura's breeder, Eeva, that made me choose the picture of Kuura sitting beside our mighty lion of stone in our Japanese garden.  Eeva had had a look at the picture earlier and I understood she had liked it.  I thought that perhaps the picture would have the same appeal to other viewers too and though I had already sent a couple of other pictures to the paper, I decided to participate with one more only ten minutes before the competition's deadline on the last of August.  It turned out to be a very good choice.

Last Friday I got a call from the local paper where a very pleasant woman told me that I had won the competition with my picture simply named "The yard guards".  Among 129 competing photos a jury had picked mine to be number one.  The feeling was just great and compared to what I had felt last Saturday after having had two disqualifications with Della at agility competitions in Nokia, I was now walking on sunshine!

On the same day Kuura turned 11 months, on September 8th, we had a visit from one of the reporters of the Alasatakunta paper.  He wrote a very nice story and took a photo of me and all the dogs next to the more stonier model in our garden, the lion.  The next day we could read all about it in the local paper.  A really memorable moment in the Hurrila life.

Paikallislehti, voittajakuva ja sen tarina

sekä mallikoira lähikuvassa.

Viime kesänä paikallislehti Alasatakunta järjesti valokuvakilpailun.  Kilpailun aiheena oli ottaa kuva pihan katseenvangitsajasta.  Minulla oli heti pari ideaa, toinen oli kuva agilityradastamme ja toinen kuva japanilaisesta puutarhasta.  Nämä kaksi paikkaa ovat minulle erittäin tärkeitä.  Ne antavat niin paljon hyvää mieltä ja iloa ja ovat paikkoja joissa viihdyn.

Itse asiassa Kuuran kasvattaja, Eeva, sai minut valitsemaan kuvan jossa Kuura istuu ison leijonamme vieressä japanilaisessa puutarhassa.  Eeva oli nähnyt kuvan aiemmin ja pitänyt siitä.  Ajattelin kuvan olevan ehkä myös muidenkin mieleen ja vaikka olin lähettänyt jo aikaisemmin pari kuvaa lehteen, päätin lähettää vielä tämän kuvan vain kymmenen minuuttia ennen määräajan loppumista viimeinen päivä elokuussa.  Valinta osoittautui erittäin onnistuneeksi.

Viime perjantaina sain puhelun paikallislehdestä, erittäin miellyttävä nainen kertoi minun voittaneen kilpailun kuvalla "Pihan vahdit".  Raati oli valinnut 129 kuvan joukosta voittajaksi juuri minun kuvan.  Tunne oli aivan mahtava verrattuna siihen miltä tuntui viime lauantaina saatuamme kaksi hylkyä Dellan kanssa kisoissa Nokialla, nyt olin aivan pilvissä!

Samana päivänä, 8. syyskuuta, kun Kuura täytti 11 kuukautta, saimme vieraaksi paikallislehden toimittajan.  Hän kirjoitti hienon jutun ja otti kuvan minusta ja koiristamme puutarhamme kivisen leijonan vieressä.  Seuraavana päivänä saimme lukea kaiken paikallislehdestä.  Ikimuistoinen päivä Hurrilan elämässä.
