Winter at last / Vihdoinkin talvi

During last weekend we probably got all the snow that's been meant for the whole season.  The world has changed into a soft looking landscape of cotton.  The trees are covered with really thick layers of snow and the branches are hanging like they were fixed, like giant arms grasping for the ground.  Nature is like picked from a fairy-tale, it's almost unreal but at the same time stunning.  If we could get a glimpse of the sun too, everything would be just perfect.

I really tried to get some pictures of our dogs playing in the snow, but it was an attempt in vain.  All our girls were of the same opinion - the snow was just too much and too deep this time!

Viime viikonloppuna satoi luultavasti koko talven lumet yhdellä kertaa.  Maisema näyttää kuin se olisi peitetty pehmeällä pumpulilla.  Puut ovat paksun lumen peitossa ja oksat roikkuvat alas liikkumattomina ja näyttää kuin jättiläisen kädet kurottaisivat maahan.  Luonto on kuin sadusta, se on melkein epätodellinen ja samalla hämmästyttävä.  Vielä kun näkisi häivähdyksen auringosta, kaikki olisi täydellistä.

Yritin todella kovasti saada kuvia koiristamme leikimässä lumessa, mutta yritys oli täysin turha.  Kaikki tytöt olivat samaa mieltä - lunta oli liikaa ja aivan liian syvää tällä kertaa!

To be or not to be - in Facebook

I am not in Facebook - yet...  Pasi is, but I'm still of the opinion that I don't have the time.  I know it's a weak excuse because I almost check Pasi's site daily.  I even put some comments on it sometimes.  I have to admit, it's amusing to read about our friends and acquaintances.  There's so much fun going on everywhere so perhaps you'll find me too very soon in the amazing world of Facebook.

I just can't decide if I'm going to to continue keeping our blog or not then..?  I know I have a lot of readers all over the world and when it comes to writing - I just love it!  Apparently, it's a question of planning and compromising.  I've only noticed lately that I've lost touch with people by not taking part of any online social networking services.  Friends that called or sent text messages earlier are nowadays regularly or almost exclusively communicating by using Facebook or any other online channel.

Sometimes it's a bit sad, because if you're not there yourself you easily get a feeling of being left out.  Friends that you have kept very close are now telling the world about their joys and sorrows before you get to know.  I know, this is how society works today.  I'm just too old-fashioned and it will take some some time for me to adjust.  I am just glad that Della, Taika and Kuura haven't put up an own Facebook group yet - and even worse, they wouldn't accept me as their friend...

En ole Facebookissa - vielä...  Pasi on, minulla ei omasta mielestäni ole siihen aikaa.  Tiedän, että selitys on heikko, koska luen Pasin sivut lähes päivittäin.  Toisinaan jopa kommentoin siellä.  Minun täytyy myöntää, että on hauskaa lukea ystävistä ja tutuista.  Kaikkialla tapahtuu niin paljon hauskoja asioita, että ehkäpä minutkin pian löytää Facebookin ihmeellisestä maailmasta.

En vain osaa päättää jatkanko blogin pitämistä sen jälkeen..?  Tiedän, että minulla on paljon lukijoita ympäri maailmaa ja mitä tulee kirjoittamiseen - minä rakastan sitä!  Ilmeisesti kysymys on järjestelyistä ja kompromissien teosta.  Olen viime aikoina huomannut kadottaneeni kosketuksen ihmisiin koska en ole mukana sosiaalisessa mediassa.  Ystävät jotka aiemmin soittivat tai lähettivät tekstiviestejä ovat nykyään säännöllisesti ja miltei vain yhteydessä Facebookin tai muun sosiaalisen median kautta.  

Se tuntuu silloin tällöin surulliselta, koska jos et ole itse mukana tunnet jääväsi ulkopuolelle.  Läheiset ystävät kertovat ilot ja surut ennen kuin itse saat niistä kuulla.  Tiedän yhteisön nykyään toimivan näin.  Olen vain liian vanhanaikainen ja minulta vie hetki aikaa sopeutua.  Siitä olen iloinen, ettei Della, Taika ja Kuura ole vielä perustaneet omaa Facebook-ryhmäänsä - ja mikä olisi pahinta, jos he eivät hyväksyisi minua ystäväkseen... 

10.-11.01. Winter Agility Games 2015

A wonderful weekend in the name of agility is over.  Ålands Bruks- och Sällskapshundsklubb (ÅBSK) once again arranged great competitions for all classes, three on Saturday and one on Sunday.  For Team Hurrila it's become a dear tradition to go to the Åland Islands for the annual Winter Agility Games.  The competitions are held in the Eckeröhallen, which is a giant indoor hall for football.  It's warm with an artificial turf, which I really like.  The judges for this year's competitions were Johanna Nyberg (FIN) and Kjell Pettersson (SWE), who offered very pleasant and challenging courses for every class.

It was lovely to meet with our Ålandic friends again.  Åland has become like a second home to me and I am always looking forward to going there.  We really enjoyed our stay this time too though our competitions did not go as planned.  I did not get any clean runs with Della nor did Pasi with Taika.  I had three annoying disqualifications on Saturday but a lovely win on Sunday.  Unfortunately we stumbled once again at the entry of the weave poles and my dream of a last certificate for passing Della on to Class 3 just came to nothing.

Pasi and Taika started off as well as Della and I that is with no other results than disqualifications on Saturday.  On Sunday they had a smooth and fast run but unfortunately Taika jumped the contacts on both the A-Frame and the dogwalk and they ended up on a seventh place.  No certificate for Taika either this time so a certain hunger for success keeps us definitively going this season too.

Thank you, ÅBSK, for a lovely weekend!  We had such fun!  See you all in Torp in May!  We're already counting the days...

Ihana viikonloppu agilityn merkeissä on ohi.  Ålands Bruks- och Sällskapshundsklubb (ÅBSK) järjesti jälleen hienot kilpailut kaikille luokille, kolme starttia lauantaina ja yksi sunnuntaina.  Ahvenanmaan Winter Agility Gamesistä on tullut rakas perinne Team Hurrilalle.  Kisat pidetään Eckeröhallissa, joka on valtavan iso sisähalli jalkapallolle.  Se on lämmin ja keinonurmipohjalla, mistä todella pidän.  Tänä vuonna tuomareina oli Johanna Nyberg (FIN) ja Kjell Pettersson (SWE), he tarjosivat mukavia ja haastavia ratoja kaikille.

Oli ihana taas tavata ahvenanmaalaiset ystävämme.  Ahvenanmaasta on tullut minulle miltei toinen koti ja odotan aina innolla sinne menoa.  Nautimme taas olostamme siellä vaikka kisat eivät menneetkään suunnitelmiemme mukaan.  En tehnyt yhtään puhdasta rataa Dellan kanssa eikä Pasikaan Taikan kanssa.  Tein lauantaina kolme ärsyttävää hylkyä, mutta ihanan voiton sunnuntaina.  Valitettavasti keppien sisämeno oli taas kompastuskivemme ja unelma viimeisestä sertifikaatista päästä kolmosluokkaan Dellan kanssa kariutui.

Pasilla ja Taikalla oli yhtä hyvä kisaonni kuin meilläkin eli lauantaina pelkkiä hylkyjä.  Sunnuntaina heillä oli sujuva ja nopea rata, mutta valitettavasti Taika ei ottanut A:n eikä puomin kontakteja ja sijoitus oli seitsemäs.  Ei sertifikaattia tälläkään kertaa Taikalle joten tietty menestyksen nälkä jäi tällekin kaudelle.

Kiitos ÅBSK:lle ihanasta viikonlopusta!  Meillä oli niin hauska!  Nähdään Torpilla toukokuussa!  Laskemme jo päiviä...

Natural beauty / Luonnollinen kauneus

We haven't had a proper winter yet.  Winter has visited us for shorter periods with both snow and freezing cold temperatures, but mostly it has been rainy, dark and from the perspective of a dog owner - very dirty!

Yesterday we had a touch of real winter again.  The morning was frosty and clear and the glass walls on our terrace were beautifully decorated by the amazing art of nature.  Kuura has got its name from this natural phenomenon, in other words Kuura means "rime" in Finnish.  Of course, I just had to take pictures of both miracles, the one on the wall and the other that would climb the walls if just possible.

Luonnonilmiöitä.

Meillä ei ole vielä ollut kunnon talvea.  Talvi on vain tullut ja mennyt lyhyinä jaksoin, hiukan lunta ja välillä tosi pakkasia, mutta enimmäkseen on ollut sateista, pimeää ja koiranomistajan mielestä - todella likaista!

Eilen meillä oli taas oikean talven kosketus.  Oli kuulas pakkasaamu ja luonto oli koristellut kauniisti terrassimme lasit.  Kuura on saanut nimensä tästä luonnonilmiöstä tai niin kuin hänen virallinen nimensä on Länsimetsän Kuurankukka.  Totta kai minun oli pakko ottaa kuvia molemmista ihmeistä, toinen lasiseinistä ja toisesta, joka kiipeäisi seinille jos vain pystyisi.

Facelift

For many years I have had a dream.  It hasn't even been a very complicated one or a dream difficult to fulfill.  I just hadn't found the right person to make it come true.  I longed for a real painting of my dogs and I wanted a really good artist for the job.

I have also thought for a long time now that the time has come to renew our team's blog banner.  The marvellous photographer Harri Virta took the former banner picture in 2010.  I remember the day in his studio in Pori very well.  Della had just turned six months and I feared that she wasn't house-trained enough yet and that she would leave an embarrassing wet spot somewhere.  Harri just told me not to worry about the puppy and enjoy the shooting instead.  So I did.  Everything went very well.  We got over 40 shots to choose among, the other one more splendid than the other. 

Pinja and Kelly are gone and Kuura has entered the Hurrila life, which made me even more wish for a new memorable picture of our family, this time by hand.  By chance I got in touch with Simo Riikonen when he visited the company where I work.  This was before Easter last year and the very same day for our meeting I mailed Simo pictures of my dogs.  He got back to me almost immediately with a draft, which I said yes to at once.

In the end of the summer I had my dream fulfilled and I got an absolutely outstanding airbrush artwork designed by Simo Riikonen.  Thank you, Simo!  Your picture means everything to me.  It's just perfect!

Minulla on jo monta vuotta ollut unelma.  Se ei edes ole ollut monimutkainen tai vaikea toteuttaa.  En vain löytänyt oikeata henkilöä joka sen voisi toteuttaa.  Kaipasin oikeaa maalattua taulua koiristani ja halusin todella hyvän tekijän sille.

Olin myös pitkään ajatellut uudistaa blogimme tunnuskuvan.  Loistava valokuvaaja Harri Virta otti edellisen kuvan vuonna 2010.  Muistan sen päivän hänen studiossa Porissa todella hyvin.  Della oli juuri täyttänyt kuusi kuukautta ja pelkäsin, ettei hän ollut vielä riittävän sisäsiisti ja olisi jättänyt märän jäljen jonnekin.  Harri pyysi minua, että lopettaisin pennusta huolehtimisen ja nauttisin sen sijaan kuvaamisesta.  Tein niin.  Kaikki meni todella hyvin.  Saimme yli 40 kuvaa valittavaksi, toinen toistaan hienompia.

Pinja ja Kelly ovat poissa ja Kuura on astunut Hurrilan elämään, se sai minut vielä enemmän toivomaan uutta ikimuistoista perhekuvaa, tällä kertaa maalattuna.  Sattumalta tapasin Simo Riikosen hänen käydessään yrityksessä jossa olen töissä.  Tämä tapahtui viime vuonna ennen pääsiäistä ja jo samana päivänä laitoin Simolle sähköpostia jossa oli kuvia koiristani.  Hän vastasi melkein heti luonnoksella mihin vastasin heti kyllä.

Loppukesästä unelmani toteutui ja sain aivan uskomattoman Simo Riikosen maalaaman taulun.  Kiitos Simo!  Sinun taulusi on minulle kaikkeni.  Se on täydellinen!

Happy New Year!

Time has come to say goodbye to the year of 2014, to make a summary and turn the pages of a new chapter in our life. The pages there are still blank and empty but the headline "2015" just waits to get us started and things going.  Again we have a new year in front of us and the expectations for a good and prosperous one are high, as always...

I had two goals, which I also achieved during 2014.  Della got a clean run in Class 2 in agility and I got her to retrieve the wooden dumbbell after two years of hard work.  It may seem that it's not much but for me it's been two marvellous victories that can't be measured by normal standards.  Someone has told me I'm crazy to put so much time and money into one dog.  Though I have really had my own doubts at times, the outcome has been worth every effort.  I just love my dog so much not to give her this chance.

I also have the luck to have great people around me.  They have supported me, believed in me and kicked me forward when I have needed it the most.  Without their amazing backup I had probably been doing something else than agility and obedience with Della today.  Thank you!  No names needed.  You're all forever in my heart.

For Taika and Pasi I have had high hopes in agility, but despite my wishes the last certificate for making Taika a Finnish agility champion is still missing.  Taika has competed well but the odds have not always been in Taika's favour during 2014.  The incident with the see-saw in Forssa has also made Taika a bit insecure at times and Pasi has got some problems to work with here during next year.  Taika has turned nine years, which means we're also caring for her health more and more.  The chase for her last certificate will continue next year but most important is that Taika stays in shape and that we have a dog that still loves doing agility and puts up with it.

Kuura is the challenge!  She's the dog every handler wishes for - or not...  Kuura is energetic, curious, keen on learning, fast and always boiling over.  In other words, patience is not Kuura's strongest qualification.  Kuura is like a wonderful puzzle with all the pieces still in a terrible mess.  When these pieces will fit into place there's no doubt Pasi will have a masterpiece to handle.  Kuura is just one of a kind.

Hyvää Uutta Vuotta 2015!

On aika sanoa hyvästit vuodelle 2014, tehdä yhteenveto ja aloittaa uusi luku elämässämme.  Sen sivut ovat vielä tyhjät, mutta otsikko "2015" odottaa, että asiat alkavat rullata.  Uusi vuosi on taas edessämme ja kuten aina, odotukset kaikesta hyvästä ja menestyksestä ovat korkealla.

Minulla oli kaksi tavoitetta vuodelle 2014 ja molemmat toteutuivat.  Della teki puhtaan radan agilityn kakkosluokassa ja sain hänet noutamaan puisen kapulan kahden vuoden kovan työn jälkeen.  Se ei vältämättä kuulosta ihmeelliseltä, mutta minulle ne ovat olleet kaksi mahtavaa voittoa joita ei voi mitata normaaleilla asteikoilla.  Joku on sanonut, että olen hullu koska olen laittanut niin paljon aikaa ja rahaa yhteen koiraan.  Vaikka välillä olen itsekin epäillyt lopputulosta on se ollut kaiken vaivan arvoinen.  Rakastan koiraani niin paljon, että halusin antaa sille tämän mahdollisuuden.

Olen myös onnekas sillä minulla on upeita ihmisiä ympärilläni.  He ovat tukeneet minua, uskoneet minuun ja potkineet minua eteenpäin kun olen sitä tarvinnut eniten.  Ilman heidän mahtavaa tukea olisin luultavasti tehnyt Dellan kanssa jotain muuta kuin agilityä ja tottelevaisuutta.  Kiitos!  Nimiä ei tarvita.  Olette ikuisesti sydämessäni.

Taikan ja Pasin suhteen minulla oli agilityssä suuret odotukset, mutta toiveistani huolimatta puuttuu Taikan viimeinen agilityn valion sertifikaatti edelleen.  Taika on kisannut hyvin, mutta tähdet eivät vain suosineet vuonna 2014.  Keinuonnettomuus Forssan kisoissa teki Taikasta myös hieman epävarman ja Pasilla on tässä haasteita ensi vuodeksi.  Taika on täyttänyt yhdeksän vuotta, minkä takia olemme myös tarkempia sen terveyden kanssa.  Sertifikaatin metsästys tulee jatkumaan ensi vuonna, mutta kaikkein tärkeintä on, että Taika pysyy hyvässä kunnossa ja rakastaa agilityä ja jaksaa tehdä sitä.

Kuura on haaste!  Se on jokaisen ohjaajan toivekoira - tai sitten ei...  Kuura on energinen, utelias, innokas oppimaan, nopea ja aina ylikierroksilla.  Toisin sanoen, kärsivällisyys ei ole Kuuran vahvin ominaisuus.  Kuura on kuin ihana palapeli, jonka kaikki palat ovat vain vielä täysin sekaisin.  Mutta, kun nämä palaset osuvat paikoilleen, Pasilla on todellinen huippukoira ohjattavanaan.  Kuura on vain aikamoinen!
