Agility & shelties

Last Friday we went to Kaarina for almost two hours of absolute great agility instructed by the Finnish top coach Timo Liuhto.  Della did again very well and it's amazing how Della's self-confidence has grown compared to the first time we went there last autumn.  Timo reminded me of it, because back then Della was avoiding both Timo and the obstacles and when Della got the chance, she was heading for the exit.  Last Friday my sheltie was circling around us all the time, tail upright looking at Timo.  After all it's quite easy to get friendly with a sheltie, you just need some tasty treats...

Our progress feels very good, but there's still a lot of work to do.  Today I should say that Della and I have moved on "by taking a giant leap forward" to use Timo's words and we are probably somewhere in the middle of our journey of getting back on track again.

Pasi and Taika are just an outstanding couple.  Taika is such a humble dog and if Pasi just shows her the way to go, Taika follows.  Their eternal combats are being fought at the contact areas and, with Taika being an older dog, it's not an easy project to correct.  Pasi and his current trainers have come to the conclusion that it's actually sometimes better to let Taika run the dogwalk or the A-Frame without stopping her, because there will be times when her paws - by mistake or not - will touch the contacts and the clean run is a fact.

On Saturday morning we went on training agility, this time in Panelia with three of our trainees.  It was great fun and the track was straight and fast.  After that we had planned to meet up with other sheltie owners at our club house in Harjavalta for a sheltie walk.  The weather was nice though we had had a touch of snow during the night, but it didn't matter.  A small but enthusiastic group set off for the Harjavalta woods.  A very nice day which gave the needed power for cleaning the house on Sunday!

Ajoimme viime perjantaina Kaarinaan Suomen huippuvalmentaja Timo Liuhdon miltei kahden tunnin hienoon agilitytreeniin.  Della suoriutui taas hienosti ja se on ihmeellistä miten Dellan itseluottamus on kasvanut siitä kun käytiin treenaamassa ensi kertaa viime syksynä.  Timo muistutti minua siitä, koska silloin Della vältteli aina tilaisuuden tullen niin Timoa kuin esteitä ja pyrki ulko-ovelle.  Viime perjantaina shelttini pyöri ympärillämme koko ajan häntä pystyssä katsellen Timoa.  Loppujen lopuksi sheltistä saa helposti kaverin, pitää vain olla herkullisia nameja...

Meidän kehittyminen tuntuu hyvältä, mutta vielä on paljon tehtävää.  Nyt voisin sanoa, että Della ja minä olemme ottaneet todella ison harppauksen eteenpäin, lainatakseni Timon sanoja olemme todennäköisesti puolimatkassa takaisin radalle.

Pasi ja Taika on erinomainen pari.  Taika on niin nöyrä koira ja kun Pasi vain näyttää minne mennään niin Taika seuraa.  Ikuinen taistelu on kontaktit, Taika kun on jo vanhempi koira, ei virheen korjaaminen ole helppoa.  Pasi ja hänen nykyiset valmentajat ovat tulleet siihen lopputulokseen, että välillä on parempi antaa Taikan juosta puomi ja A-este eikä yritä pysäyttää sitä, koska kyllä ne tassut joskus osuuvat kontaktille - erehdyksessä tai ei - ja puhdas rata on tosi asia.

Lauantai aamuna trenattiin myös agilityä, tällä kertaa Paneliassa kolmen valmennettavan kanssa.  Meillä oli hauskaa ja rata oli suoraviivainen ja nopea.  Tämän jälkeen meillä olikin suunnitelma tavata muita shelttiomistajia Harjavallan majalla ja tehdä shelttilenkki.  Sää oli mukava vaikka yöllä olikin satanut lunta, mutta se ei haittanut.  Pieni mutta innokas ryhmä suuntasi Harjavallan metsiin.  Todella mukava päivä joka antoi sopivasti voimia siivoukseen sunnuntaille!

Kuura 5 months / Kuura 5 kuukautta

Speedy and energetic, curious and bold, sweet and fabulous!  That's our Kuura - five months old today!  There's no sign of Kuura having been the smallest puppy in the litter once.  Kuura has been a healthy pup from the beginning and she eats and likes all kinds of food.  Kuura is still served puppy food three times a day, mixed with home-made food and rape-oil.  As well as Kuura eats with great relish, Kuura's also well-mannered while being served her food. Having two other dogs in the house, there has to be certain rules at dinner-time.  Having her first meal in our house Kuura was taught to sit and wait the same way as Della and Taika. No one is allowed to start eating before having got the "you're welcome-permission".

Kuura is also in the midst of cutting her second teeth and Kuura's ears still look very nice.  No glue yet...  Now we're dreaming of attending dog shows.

Viisi kuukautta ihanaa sheltti poweria.

Nopea ja energinen, utelias ja rohkea, söpö ja fantastinen!  Se on meidän Kuura - tänään viisi kuukautta!  Ei merkkiäkään, että Kuura olisi ollut pentueen pienin.  Kuura on ollut terve pentu alusta alkaen ja syö ja pitää kaikenlaisista ruuista.  Kuura saa vielä penturuokaa kolme kertaa päivässä, johon on sekoitettu kotiruokaa ja rypsyöljyä.  Kuura syö hyvällä ruokahalulla ja käyttäytyy myös hyvin kun ruoka tarjoillaan.  Kun talossa on myös kaksi muuta koiraa täytyy ruoka-aikaan olla tietyt säännöt.  Kun Kuura sai ensimmäisen ateriansa se opetettiin heti istumaan ja odottamaan kuten Della ja Taikakin. Kukaan ei saa aloittaa ennen "ole hyvä-käskyä".

Kuura on juuri vaihtamassa maitohampaansa ja Kuuran korvat näyttävät edelleen todella hyviltä.  Ei vielä liiman tarvetta...  Nyt haaveilemme näyttelyihin osallistumisesta.

Wall of F(r)ame

It's a bit funny sometimes how a certain, quite simple thing can take time before getting done.  At our club house in Harjavalta we have a wall with pictures of dogs which have become champions during the years.  Mostly there are pictures of champion show dogs. There's only been one dog before Taika that has achieved the title Agility Champion so Taika has really put a special paw mark in our club's history books.

Taika was crowned Agility Jumping Champion in August last year but it wasn't until now I got Taika's champion picture framed and put to our club's "Wall of Fame".  Taika was also awarded The Agility Dog of 2013 Class Small at our annual meeting last Wednesday. Taika had scored 57 points which made her the winner of the award.  Della also had a quite good last year though our different problems and scored 52 points, which meant Della came in second after Taika.  We had five dogs competing about The Agility Dog of the Year Award in the class for small dogs.

Joskus on hieman outoa miten jokin pieni asia voi viedä aikaa ennen kuin sen saa tehtyä. Harjavallassa majamme yhdelle seinälle on kiinnitetty kuvat koirista jotka ovat saavuttaneet seurassamme valioarvon.  Eniten kuvia on näyttelyvalioista.  Vain yksi koira ennen Taikaa on saavuttanut agilityvalioarvon joten Taika on todella jättänyt erityiset tassun jälkensä seuran historian kirjoihin.  

Taikasta tuli agilityn hyppyvalio viime vuoden elokuussa, mutta vasta nyt sain Taikan valiokuvan kehykseen ja seuran "Wall of Fame:iin".  Vuosikokouksessa viime keskiviikkona Taika palkittiin myös Vuoden 2013 Agilityn Miniluokan Koirana.  Taika keräsi 57 pistettä millä voitti palkinnon.  Dellallakin oli aika hyvä viime vuosi ongelmista huolimatta ja Della saavutti 52 pistettä, jolla sijoittui toiseksi Taikan jälkeen.  Parhaasta miniluokan agilitykoiran palkinnosta kisasi viisi koiraa. 

How to get people together? / Miten saada ihmisiä yhteen?

Sometimes it's not easy to find the solutions to make things work.  Last Sunday we had the annual meeting of The Western Division of The Finnish Shetland Sheepdog Association on the schedule at our club in Harjavalta.  Unfortunately only four people attended the meeting, which meant the meeting was cancelled due to not being able to form a new board.  Pasi and I have been on the board for two years by now and we noticed already last year that there were big difficulties in getting the members gathered.  It's so sad because I have no idea why it should have to be like this.  Our breed should bring people together, not drive them apart.

The four of us that had showed up, drank our coffee, had a nice chat and left for a refreshing walk in the woods of Harjavalta.  We let our dogs run free and it was great to see how they enjoyed the company of each other.  The Sheltie is just great and we had a good amount of laughs during the afternoon.  Back at the club house we decided to get all the dogs together for a picture.  The only problem was a puppy named Kuura, which had to be on the move all the time.  In Kuura's opinion, life's just too fun to stay in place...

Joskus ei ole helppoa löytää niitä oikeita ratkaisuja.  Viime sunnuntaina piti olla Lännen Sheltit ry:n vuosikokous seuran majalla Harjavallassa.  Paikalle tuli valitettavasti vain neljä osallistujaa ja kokous peruuntui, koska uutta hallitusta ei voinut muodostaa.  Pasi ja minä olemme olleet hallituksessa kaksi vuotta ja huomasimme jo viime vuonna, että on vaikeaa saada jäseniä mukaan.  Se on todella surullista ja emme ymmärrä miksi.  Rotumme on niin ihana, että sen pitäisi saada ihmiset yhteen eikä päinvastoin.

Me neljä, jotka olimme paikalla, vietimme mukavan hetken yhdessä, joimme kahvia ja lähdimme sen jälkeen virkistävälle lenkille Harjavallan metsiin.  Koirat saivat juosta vapaana ja oli ihana katsoa miten ne nauttivat toistensa seurasta.  Sheltti vain on niin mainio ja saimme monet mukavat naurut iltapäivän aikana.  Kun päästiin takaisin majalle, päätimme ottaa ryhmäkuvan koiristamme.  Oli vain yksi ongelma, nimeltään Kuura, joka liikkui koko ajan.  Kuuran mielestään elämä on aivan liian hauskaa, että voisi pysähtyä paikoilleen...

4 months and bouncing / 4 kuukautta ja pomppii

Kuura turns four months today.  It's incredible how time just flies!  Not very long ago we could still hold and carry her with just one hand.  Today our "Lady Grey" demands the whole lap.  If Kuura doesn't get it, she just takes it!  That's the way our Kuura is!  Adorable, open and loving everyone.

During these weeks Kuura has been with us we've experienced so much fun. Well, Taika and Della would perhaps prefer another definition of the situation, at least in the very beginning of Kuura's entering the House of Hurrila.  It was a bit like a storm hit us, but a very lovely one.  Taika suffered the most and decided to hide under the kitchen table for about three days.  Della, on the other hand, enjoyed Kuura's company at once.  Della played with Kuura but also told Kuura the rules of the house when the playing got too rough.  Della made it quite clear, who's in charge.

From having been a biting, teasing and fighting little rascal screaming like a sea gull at times, Kuura has turned into an energetic and bold - sometimes also reckless - young bitch.  Kuura is just the kind of type we've been searching for.  Kuura is not at all sensitive to sounds, she's curious and always exploring the world around her.  Seldom Kuura stays in place.  If she's not running, she's bouncing around in her own peculiar style, that is not straight forward but right up the "gazelle way".  She also loves to jump into bags and drawers without checking up on what's in them at first...  Sometimes it feels like Kuura has no idea of what cautiousness is and I have thought about asking Eeva, Kuura's breeder, if it's still possible to order a small dose of common sense for our grey madcap...

Kuura has been on the move with us as much as possible.  Among other things Kuura's been attending our agility courses, she's also been training regularly once a week in Taika's and Della's obedience group and made our co-workers very happy when visiting the place where we work.  Kuura has been visiting places together with Taika and Della but it's also been important to bring Kuura with us without our two other dogs.  It's also significant to mention that all training is still made in a very playful mode and only for very short terms.

We're so enjoying Kuura and it's going to be very interesting to see what will become of her. There's no doubt that Pasi has got a wonderful faithful friend to meet the future with. Time will show if Kuura is in to agility, obedience or shows.  One thing's for sure, Kuura already makes a great companion dog!

Kuura täyttää tänään neljä kuukautta.  Uskomatonta miten aika rientää!  Siitä ei ole kauan kun Kuura voi kantaa kämmenellä.  Tänään "Leidi Harmaa" vaatii koko sylin.  Jos Kuura ei pääse syliin, se tulee väkisin! Sellainen meidän Kuura on!  Ihana, avoin ja rakastaa kaikkea.

Kuluneiden viikojen aikana kun Kuura on ollut meillä olemme kokeneet niin paljon hauskoja asioita.  No, Taikalla ja Dellalla olisi ehkä eriävä mielipide asiasta, ainakin Kuuran ensimmäisestä viikosta Hurrilassa.  Oli kuin myrsky olisi iskenyt taloon, tosin ihana sellainen.  Taika kärsi eniten ja piiloutui keittiön pöydän alle kolmeksi päiväksi.  Della taas nautti Kuuran seurasta heti.  Della leikki Kuuran kanssa, mutta opetti myös talon säännöt heti kun leikki meni liian rajuksi.  Della teki selväksi, kuka on pomo.

Kuurasta, purevasta, kiusaavasta ja tappelevasta pienestä riiviöstä, joka kirkui kuin lokki, on tullut energinen ja rohkea - joskus miltei uhkarohkea - nuori neiti.  Kuura on juuri sellainen tyyppi jota olimme toivoneet.  Kuura ei ole herkkä äänille, se on utelias ja tutkii koko ajan ympäristöään.  Se pysyy harvoin aloillaan.  Jos se ei juokse se pomppii omalla persoonallisella tyylillään, ei eteenpäin vaan suoraan ylös kuin gaselli.  Kuura pitää myöskin kasseihin ja laatikoihin hyppäämisestä varmistamatta ensin mitä niissä on... Joskus tuntuu, ettei Kuura tajua mitä varovaisuus on ja olenkin muutaman kerran ajatellut kysyä Eevalta, Kuuran kasvattajalta, olisiko vielä mahdollisuus tilata hiukan järkeä jälkikäteen meidän rasavillille...

Kuura on ollut aina mukana kaikkialla kun mahdollista.  Se on muun muassa ollut meidän agility tunneilla ja koulutuksessa Taikan ja Dellan joka viikkoisessa toko-treeneissä ja virkistänyt työkavereitamme käymällä välillä töissä meidän kanssamme.  Kuura on vieraillut paikoissa Taikan ja Dellan kanssa, mutta on myös ollut tärkeää, että se joskus liikkuu ilman "tukikoiriakin".  Täytyy myös mainita, että kaikki treenit on tehty leikin varjolla ja vain lyhyitä jaksoja.

Pidämme todella paljon Kuurasta ja on mielenkiintoista nähdä mitä siitä kehittyy.  Ei ole epäilystäkään, että Pasilla on mahtava ja uskollinen kaveri tuleviin koitoksiin.  Aika näyttää on Kuurasta agilityyn, tokoon tai näyttelyyn.  Yksi asia on varma, Kuura on jo loistava seurakoira!

Della can really smile.  We've never had a Sheltie before smiling like Della.  A few years ago I got even compliments on having a dog with such a smiling face.  It was a joke, of course.  It was a male dog owner in his fifties, who had checked Della out for a while and how she reacted to his lovely and very well-behaved Australian Shepherd.  He told me that his wife had been breeding Shetland Sheepdogs successfully in Sweden for many years and in his opinion, tri-coloured Shelties are very different from the ones with other colours.  "They've got this black-and-white-syndrome, which means they think they are all policemen...".  He said it with a glint in his eyes but, in a funny way, I thought he was right.  No one else of our dogs has ever showed their teeth the same way Della does.

Taika, for instance, is such a good-natured dog that we sometimes wonder if she even knows that teeth can be used for anything else than just eating...  It would be nice if Taika would discover this possibility quite soon, because without showing any signs of discipline Kuura will soon have trimmed Taika's back and tail into some crazy Chinese crested dog-style!

What will become of Kuura?  Kuura's breeder Eeva told us that Kuura's lovely mother, Mila, has had a similar "demon smile" as a puppy as Kuura's got in the pictures playing with Lulu.  This knowledge combined with Della's smile showing "law-and-order"..?  Well, perhaps we'll have our own precious Mona Lisa with her mysterious smile disguised in a sweet blue merle Sheltie face.

Della todella osaa hymyillä.  Meillä ei ole ollut sellaista hymyilevää shelttiä kuin Della aikaisemmin.  Pari vuotta sitten sain vielä onnittelut siitä, että minulla on koira joka hymyilee.  Se oli tietysti vitsi.  Keski-ikäinen mies, jolla oli ihana ja todella hyväkäytöksinen australian paimenkoira, oli vähän aikaa tarkkaillut Dellan käytöstä ja reaktioita hänen koiraansa kohti.  Mies kertoi minulle, että hänen vaimonsa oli menestyksekkäästi kasvattanut shelttejä Ruotsissa monta vuotta ja miehen mukaan, trikkiväriset yksilöt ovat luonteeltaan ihan erilaisia verrattuna muun värisiin sheltteihin.  "Niillä on "musta-valko-syndrooma" eli ne uskovat, että ne ovat kaikki poliiseja...".  Mies sanoi sen vähän pilke silmäkulmassa, mutta jollain hauskalla tavalla ajattelin, että hän on oikeassa.  Yksikään meidän koiristamme ei ole koskaan näyttäneet hampaitaan samalla tavalla kuin Della.

Taika, esimerkiksi, on niin kiltti koira, että me joskus ihmettelemme, tietääkö Taika edes, että voi käyttää hampaita muuhun kuin syömiseen...  Se olisi muuten kiva jos Taika keksisi sen aika pian tai Kuura ehtii vielä muuttaa Taikan selkäkarvat ja hännän johonkin hulluun kiinanharjakoira-tyyliin!

Mitä sitten Kuurasta tulee?  Kuuran kasvattaja Eeva kertoi meille, että Kuuran ihanalla äidillä, Milalla, on ollut samankaltainen "demoni hymy" pentuna kuin kuvissa Kuuralla sen leikkiessä Lulun kanssa.  Tämä tieto yhdistettynä Dellan "laki-ja-järjestys-hymyyn"..?  Jaa, ehkä me saamme oman rakkaan Mona Liisan, jolla salaperäinen hymy on valepuettu nättiin blue merle-sheltin kasvoihin.
