Brie loves life, she's active and curious. In Brie's world nothing is meant for just staying in place too long, her ears are of the same opinion. Brie is allowed to enjoy her lively puppyhood, but her ears need to get a bit better manners before it's too late. A few weeks ago I decided to give them a helping hand and to shape them.
In the beginning of my career with shelties I used weights but it turned out to be quite in vain. By using weights you usually obtain an opposite not desirable effect, the ears get stronger.
For almost six years I used chewing gum to shape my first sheltie's ears and Kelly did not complain even once about having small balls of gum on the inside of the top of her ears. The only outcome of these persistent efforts was a very pleased producer of chewing gum and a couple of ears that were almost bending backwards instead of forward.
Della's got natural ears with a nice bending. One of her ears showed a tendency to be a bit rowdy though and I got a hint from a friend to glue it. Someone also told me back then that tricoloured shelties usually have got not only smaller, but also a bit harder ears than sable coloured and blue merles. Therefore their ears may need some help to get into the right position. I am very satisfied with Della's set of ears and she usually gets pleasant judgement at shows about them.
When using glue it is extremely important to use a very gentle type of glue and glue ONLY TO HAIR, not to skin! If you're not familiar with the way how to glue the ears ask for help from someone who has done it before. The idea of using glue is that the ear will be able to shape naturally as the puppy grows and without pressure. Time will show, but I am very hopeful in Brie's case.

Briellä on ihanat korvat vaikka ne elävätkin omaa elämäänsä aika ajoin. Välillä ne ovat aivan täydelliset, Brien näyttäessä oikealta sheltiltä. Muutama tunti myöhemmin luulet vaihtaneesi rotua, kun molemmat korvat ovat pystyssä ja omistaja on hermoromahduksen partaalla.
Brie rakastaa elämää, se on aktiivinen ja utelias. Brien maailmassa mitään ei ole tarkoitettu paikalla pysyväksi liian pitkään, ja sen korvat ovat samaa mieltä. Brie saa nauttia eloisasta pentuajasta, mutta korvat pitää saada kuntoon ennen kuin on liian myöhäistä. Muutama viikko sitten päätin auttaa asiaa ja muotoilin niitä.
Ensimmäisten shelttien kanssa käytiin korvissa painoja, mutta se osoittautui turhaksi. Painoja käyttämällä saat usein ei toivotun tuloksen, korvat vahvistuvat.
Ensimmäinen shelttini, Kellyn, korvien kärjessä oli purukumipalloja painona miltei kuusi vuotta eikä se milloinkaan häirinnyt Kellyä. Ainoa tulos tästä määrätietoisesta uhrauksesta oli tyytyväinen purukumin valmistaja ja pari korvia jotka olivat miltei taipuneet taaksepäin eivätkään eteenpäin.
Dellalla on kauniit luonnollisesti taipuneet korvat. Vaikka toinen korva olikin hieman "itsepäinen" sain silloin ystävältä neuvon liimata sen. Joku muu kertoi myös silloin, että trikkisheltteillä on yleensä pienemmät ja hieman kovemmat korvat kuin soopeleilla ja blue merleillä. Tämän takia ne saattavat tarvita pientä apua jäädäkseen oikeaan asentoon. Olen erittäin tyytyväinen Dellan korviin ja näyttelyissä saamme yleensä hyvät arvosanat niistä.
Liimaa käytettäessä on erittäin tärkeää käyttää hellää (vesiohenteista, esim. maitoliima) liimaa ja liimata aina AINOASTAAN KARVAT, ei ihoa! Jos et ole tottunut miten korvat tulisi liimata, kannattaa kysyä neuvoa joltain joka on tehnyt sen aiemmin. Liimauksen ideana on asettaa korvat luonnolliseen asentoon pennun kasvaessa ja ilman painetta. Aika näyttää, mutta olen erittäin toiveikas Brien suhteen.
