16.04. International Dog Show, Vaasa

The last few weeks have been more than busy.  Among other things our home has been quite upside down due to a kitchen face lift, which I have been planning to realize for about two years by now.  At the same time I had entered three dogs for the International Dog Show in Vaasa, that is I have been a bit torn between emptying our lockers in the kitchen and getting my dogs ready for the show.  I was cleaning cups and plates with one hand while the other one put my dogs into the shower and cut claws.  Don't ask me how but I got it to work and both kitchen and dogs are in great shape.

I am more than satisfied with the show though I can't really accept that Della was judged "Good" for the very first time ever.  Perhaps the impression of being a quite bald sheltie can explain why neither Della nor Kuura got better verdicts this time.  I just hate when the coat is dropping before shows!  Our judge Ann-Christine Johansson from Sweden was still to judge a couple of Mexican Hairless Dogs before her day ended.  Perhaps we would have enjoyed a greater success by entering that ring instead with our two hairless sheepdogs, Della and Kuura.

Brie on the other hand has got coat but a bit too light ears and in a way I feared the judge's verdict.  Brie made me proud by behaving very well in the ring and she also charmed our pleasant judge.  Ann-Christine told me she would so much like to give Brie EXC (Excellent) but due to her ears Brie was rewarded with VG (Very Good) and I did not complain at all.

Viime viikot ovat olleet enemmän kuin kiireisiä.  Muun muuassa kotimme on ollut ylösalaisin keittiöremontin takia jota olen suunnitellut toteutettavaksi jo kaksi vuotta.  Samaan aikaan olin ilmoittanut kolme koiraa Vaasan Kansainväliseen Koiranäyttelyyn, olin hieman hajalla tyhjentäessäni keittiön kaappeja ja valmistellessani koiria näyttelyyn.  Toisella kädellä puhdistin kuppeja ja lautasia ja toisella pesin koiria ja leikkasin kynsiä.

Olen erittäin tyytyväinen näyttelyyn vaikka en voikaan täysin hyväksyä, että Della sai ainoastaan "hyvän" ensimmäistä kertaa koskaan.  "Karvaton sheltti olemus" saattoi olla syynä, ettei Della ja Kuurakaan saaneet parempaan arvostelua tällä kertaa,  Olen todella vihainen kun turkki lähtee juuri ennen näyttelyä!  Ruotsista tullut tuomari Ann-Christine Johansson tuomaroi päivän päätteeksi muutamia Meksikon karvattomia koiria.  Olisimme ehkä saavuttaneet suuren suosion samassa kehässä kahdella karvattomalla sheltillä, Della ja Kuura.

Briellä on taas toisaalta hieno turkki, mutta hieman liian kevyet korvat ja olin vähän peloissani tuomarin arvostelusta.  Brie teki minusta hyvin ylpeän käyttäyessään hienosti kehässä ja hurmaten mukavan tuomarin.  Ann-Christine sanoi haluavansa todella paljon antaa Brielle ERI:n, mutta korvien vuoksi Brie palkittiin EH:llä enkä ollut ollenkaan tyytymätön.

This day a year ago I got the most wonderful news from Holland.  Brie had seen the daylight for the very first time.  This was the start of a marvellous adventure arranged by great friends. Thank you, Ria and Rami, for making this possible and thank you, Yvonne and Roderick, for a dog that has really won my heart.  I will never get tired of this fine piece of cheese.  Brie is delicious in all ways.

Happy Birthday O'Neill, Paco and Joy too!  Hope to see you all again some day.

Tasan vuosi sitten sain ihania uutisia Hollannista.  Brie oli nähnyt päivän valon.  Siitä alkoi ihmeellinen seikkailu jonka oli hyvät ystävät järjestäneet.  Kiitos, Ria ja Rami siitä, että teitte tämän mahdolliseksi, Yvonne ja Roderick koirasta joka on valloittanut sydämeni.  En koskaan ikävysty tähän hienoon juustopalaan.  Brie on herkullinen kaikin tavoin.

Hyvää Syntymäpäivää myös O'Neill, Paco and Joy!  Toivottavasti tapaamme joskus.

Summer in April / Kesä huhtikuussa

Last Saturday we left for the beach meant for dogs in Pori.  For some time now I have planned to go there to test my new camera and hopefully get some great shots of our dogs.  The forecast promised sunny weather so we put our lovely pack into the car and headed for the quite unique sand dunes of Yyteri Beach.

We had an early start so we got lucky.  When we arrived the dog beach laid empty in front of us in all its splendor.  The only visitors were a couple of beautiful white swans quite close to the shore and three yelling seagulls.  The sea looked almost warm in the bright sunshine and the sound of small waves against the shore was enchanting.  You could easily fool yourself.  It was like a touch of summer in April.

For  a few hours we enjoyed watching our four crackpots running like crazy back and forth on the beach.  They enjoyed the excursion as much as we did and back home again we noticed we had got four new door mats.  Life on the beach is not only a lot of fun, it's also exhausting...

Rannalla huhtikuussa.

Viime lauantaina menimme Porin koirarannalle.  Olin jo jonkin aikaa suunnitellut meneväni sinne testaamaan uutta kameraani ja saadakseni toivottavasti muutaman hienon kuvan koiristamme.  Sääennuste lupasi aurinkoista säätä joten pakkasimme lauman autoon ja suuntasimme Yyterin ainutlaatuisille hiekkadyyneille.

Meillä oli aikainen lähtö ja olimme onnekkaita.  Saapuessamme rannalle se oli täysin hiljainen kaikessa ihanuudessaan.  Rannan ainoat vieraat olivat pari valkoisia kauniita joutsenia aika lähellä rantaviivaa ja kolme kirkuvaa lokkia.  Kirkkaassa auringonpaisteessa meri näytti miltei lämpimältä ja pienten aaltojen ääni rantaa vasten oli lähes taianomainen.  Voisit helposti huijata itseäsi.  Oli kuin kesä huhtikuussa.

Nautimme muutaman tunnin katselemalla meidän neljän rasavillin juoksemista hullun lailla edestakaisin rannalla.  Ne nauttivat retkestä yhtä paljon kuin mekin ja kotona huomasimme, että meillä oli neljä uutta ovimattoa.  Rantaelämä ei ole vain hauskaa, se on myös erittäin väsyttävää...

Non-Official Easter Dog Show / Pääsiäis-Match Show

Easter this year has really been a massive dog event weekend for the team with two non-official dog shows on the agenda, the first one on Good Friday the other one on Easter Eve.  The show on Friday was arranged by the dog club in Rauma and the Easter Eve show by our own club in Harjavalta.  The Rauma show was indoors while Harjavalta arranged its show outdoors as usual and according to tradition.  The show in Harjavalta is always a bit challenging due to the not always so sunny weather conditions.

During these two intense days Brie competed in the group for small puppies while Della and Kuura participated in the class for small grownups.  These kinds of shows are not only fun, they are also a great place to train your dog and get experience before attending an official dog show.

Neither Della nor Kuura succeeded in any of the two shows though they behaved very well in the ring.  I have always been of the opinion that a dog show is a far more difficult event than agility because everything is so much due to what the judge likes or not.  I can train my dog to stand and move nicely in front of the judge, but in the end it's the judge who decides the quality of what he or she sees.  It's a question of taste and though there are written standards for every breed, they do not always match with the judge's personal opinions.

At a non-official dog show event - or match show - you compete in pairs at first.  It's not at all an easy job for the judge many times to decide which dog wins the other, because seldom your competitor has even got the same breed as you.  The judge at events like this does not only pay attention to looks but also to things like how the dog behaves and the teamwork between the handler and his dog.  The judge rewards the dogs with ribbons, a red one or a blue one.  When the judge has gone through all the dueling pairs, the dogs with red ribbons will compete against each other and the dogs with blue ribbons will do the same.  As I said, to be a winner at a dog show is certainly not a piece of cake.

Brie turned out to be our team's shining star during the weekend because on Good Friday she won in the group for small pups, which had got the blue ribbon from the judge in the previous duel.  By winning her class Brie was qualified for the non-official Best-in-Show at the end of the day.  There she was to compete against seven other class winners, a lovely mix of grownups and puppies of different breeds and sizes.  In the finals we came in seventh and I am so proud of my "cheese dog".

On Easter Eve Brie continued being successful, this time in Harjavalta.  She did not win her class this time but came in third in -again(!) - the class for small puppies with blue ribbons.  What a wonderful Easter and what a marvellous dog!  I am so happy.

Menestyksekäs Brie.

Pääsiäinen oli meidän tiimille täynnä koiratapahtumia mätsäreiden merkeissä, ensimmäinen oli pitkäperjantaina ja toinen pääsiäsisaattona.  Pitkäperjantain match show:n järjesti RKS ja lauantain HPSH ry.  Rauman näyttely oli sisätiloissa kun taas Harjavallan oli perinteisesti ulkona.  Harjavallan mätsäri on aina haastellinen koska aina ei ole niin aurinkoiset olosuhteet.

Näiden päivien aikana Brie osallistui pienten pentujen ryhmään kun Della ja Kuura olivat pienten aikuisten ryhmässä.  Tämän kaltaiset näyttelyt eivät ole vain hauskoja vaan myös erinomaisia paikkoja harjoitella oikeaa näyttelyä varten.

Ei Della eikä Kuura menestyneet kummassakaan show:ssa vaikka ne esiintyivät hyvin kehässä.  Olen aina ollut sitä mieltä, että näyttely on vaikeampi laji kuin agility, koska tuomarin mieltymykset ratkaisevat.  Voin opettaa koirani seisomaan ja liikkumaan hienosti tuomarin edessä, mutta loppujen lopuksi tuomarin mielipide ja näkemys ratkaisee.  Kyseessä on makuasia vaikka jokaisesta rodusta löytyy kirjalliset määritelmät ne eivät aina vaikuta tuomarin henkilökohtaiseen mielipiteeseen.

Match show:ssa kisataan ensin aina pareittain.  Tuomarille ei aina ole helppoa päättää kumpi parin koirista voittaa, koska harvoin saman rodun koirat kisaavat vastakkain.  Match show:n tuomari ei katso pelkästään ulkomuotoa, myöskin ohjaajan ja koiran yhteistyötä.  Kun tuomari on käynyt kaikki parit läpi, punaisen sekä sinisen nauhan saaneet koirat kisaavat ensin keskenään paremmuudesta.  Kuten sanoin, voittaminen show:ssa ei ole helppoa.

Viikonlopun aikana Brie osoittautui tiimin tähdeksi sillä perjantaina se voitti pienten pentujen sinisen nauhan ryhmän.  Ryhmän voitolla pääsi päivän päätteeksi Best-in Show:hun jossa se kisasi seitsemää muuta ryhmävoittajaa vastaan.  Hieno sekoitus eri rotuisia ja kokoisia aikuisia ja pentuja.  Lopullinen sijoitus oli seitsemäs ja olin niin ylpeä "juustokoirastani".

Lauantaina Brien menestys jatkui, tällä kertaa Harjavallassa.  Se ei voittanut ryhmäänsä, mutta sijoittui kolmanneksi - taas - pienten pentujen sinisten ryhmässä.  Hieno pääsiäinen ja mahtava koira!  Olen niin iloinen.

Brie 11 months / Brie 11 kuukautta

Life with Brie is fun, exciting and almost always with a full speed ahead without brakes.  At the same time Brie can be very cuddly.  Still having a fabulous coat, you will feel like you're attacked by a teddy bear when she suddenly curls up in your lap.  She's gorgeous.

The most energetic dog also needs to sleep at times.  Brie is mostly taking her naps upside down in a corner, the more narrow the better.  The nights she usually spends in her bed next to Della or in our bed, which can be quite crowded sometimes.

Mahtava Brie, aina nauttimassa elämästä.

Elämä Brien kanssa on hauskaa, jännittävää ja melko usein täyttä vauhtia eteenpäin ilman jarruja.  Samalla Brie voi myös olla todella hellyyden kipeä.  Kun sillä on vielä todella tuuhea turkki, hyökätessään syliin se tuntuu nallekarhulta.  Brie on mahtava.

Erittäin energinen koira tarvitsee välillä myös unta.  Brie nukkuu useimmiten ylösalaisin ja nurkassa, mitä ahtaamassa sen parempi.  Yöt se viettää yleensä pedissään Dellan pedin vieressä tai meidän sängyssä, mikä voi joskus olla melkoisen täynnä.

Back on track / Takaisin raiteilleen

It's such a great feeling!  After not having been able to train agility for over six months by now, Della is taking the first small jumps to get back into shape again.  Della got her now monthly treatment by physiotherapist Tanja Pitkänen in Rauma last Tuesday and Della's development has been remarkable.  Tanja still found places of stiffness but it's nothing compared to what she had to deal with in September last year.

Della has suffered from a quite severe back problem, which made her jump with a very bad technique.  Among other things she had problems with the distances between obstacles, to estimate where to push off and with a lack of power in her hind legs the outcome was usually a run around the obstacle instead of performing it.  The well-known osteopath Leena Piira succeeded in determining the cause of Della's back problem to her right hind leg.  The leg is a bit turned inwards, which makes the back suffering from a constant situation of not being totally straight.

The rehabilitation has been a mix of small changes in Della's diet and exercises where training of the deep muscles have been of priority.  We have been walking the ladder placed on the ground, where Della has to plan her steps thoroughly so her legs hit the gaps of the ladder one at a time.  The pace is slow to make the right really deep muscles work.  I also use a special flat gym ball filled with air.  The purpose with this kind of ball is balance training and in Della's case also to strengthen her muscles in her back and hind legs.  These exercises are very demanding and should not be done for more than a minute or two though they may look like a piece of cake.  The effects are not visible from the outside and by repeating these movements too eagerly you risk harming your dog instead of helping it.

Our dogs eat a mix of high standard dog food and my own home cooked meals.  The change I've made here is to use only whole grain products when it's possible.  It's turned out to be a very good change, because we like it too.  It's not just doing good, there's also great flavour in it.

On niin hieno tunne kun yli kuuden kuukauden agilitytauon jälkeen Della taas tekee pieniä hyppyjä päästäkseen kuntoon.  Della oli joka kuisella fysioterapia käynillä Tanja Pitkäsen luona tiistaina ja Dellan paraneminen on ollut huomattavaa.  Tanja löytää edelleen jumiutuneita kohtia, mutta ei mitään verrattuna viime vuoden syyskuisiin.

Della on kärsinyt melko vaikeasta selkäongelmasta, joka sai sen hyppäämään erittäin huonolla tekniikalla.  Muiden ongelmien lisäksi sillä oli vaikeuksia arvioida ponnistuspaikkaa takajalan heikon ponnistusvoiman takia, niinpä lopputulos usein oli, että se useimmin juoksi este ympäri kuin suoritti sen.  Tunnettu osteopaatti Leena Piira onnistui paikantamaan syyn Dellan selkäongelmassa sen oikeaan takajalkaan.  Jalka on hieman kääntynyt sisäänpäin, mikä aiheutti ongelman selkään sen ollessa koko ajan vinossa.

Kuntoutus on ollut pieniä muutoksia Dellan ruokavaliossa, liikunnassa ja eritysesti kiinnitetty huomiota syvien lihasten harjoittamiseen.  Olemme kävelleet maassa makaavia tikapuita jossa Dellan tulee askeltaa huolella niin, että joka jalka osuu vuorollaan askelmien väliin.  Liikkeen on oltava hidas jotta syvät lihakset joutuvat työskentelemään.  Käytän myöskin ilmatäytteistä litteää jumppapalloa.  Tämän tarkoitus on saada Dellalle tasapainoharjoituksia ja myöskin vahvistaa selän ja takajalkojen lihaksia.  Vaikka harjoitukset näyttävät helpoilta, ne ovat erittäin vaativia eikä saa tehdä toistoja kuin muutaman minuutin ajan kerrallaan.  Muutokset eivät näy ulospäin ja liikkeiden liialliset toistot voivat enemminkin aiheuttaa vahinkoa kuin auttaa koiraa.

Koiramme syövät sekoitusta hyvänlaatuista kuivamuonaa ja kotiruokaa.  Muutokset jotka olen tehnyt Dellan ruokavalioon on, että käytän täysjyvätuotteita jos vain mahdollista.  Muutos on ilmeisesti hyvä koska itsekin pidämme siitä.  Se ei vain tee hyvää, siinä on myös niin paljon makua.

One game, four styles / Yksi peli, neljä tyyliä

Our dogs have got a new thing to play with, a learning and thinking game.  Actually it's thanks to Pasi we've got it, because he was the lucky winner in a draw a few weeks ago.  We have never had a game like this before so it's been quite interesting to study how our dogs approach a problem with hidden treats.

It's a wooden game with parts that are meant to be picked up or pushed aside to get hold of the tasteful rewards beneath.  Each one of the members in our pack had its own way to handle and solve the problem.  By watching them one by one, I got quite a good idea of their different personalities as well as the ways they behaved also confirmed my earlier opinions of them.  We have a great pack with funny and quite clever individuals.  I'm so proud of them.

Taika is lousy doing nose work so it did not at all come as a surprise that she just stared at the game with no intentions to even try to pick something up.  She just waited for a helping hand to turn the wooden blocks for her.  Taika is a clever dog always having someone else doing the "dirty work" for her.

Della on the other hand is not at all keen on using her mouth in cases like this.  Having spent two years to get Della to retrieve the dumbbell, there was no doubt Della was going to handle the game by using her paws at first.  So she did.  The blocks go quite deep into the wooden game plate, but being very persistent Della got them out of their places by using an effective but also violent paw technique.

Kuura approached the game like a professional.  She passed the test with flying colours and picked the blocks one by one and pulled the moving parts aside in record time.  I was really impressed.

Last but not least Brie entered the game and her solution to the problem was simple.  She turned the whole game plate up side down and that's it.  Why put too much energy into thinking when you get a much quicker outcome by using force..!

Meidän koirat ovat saaneet uuden lelun, älypelin.  Oikeastaan meidän täytyy kiittää Pasia, sillä hän oli onnellinen voittaja muutama viikkoa sitten arvonnassa.  Meillä ei ole koskaan ollut tällaista peliä aikaisemmin joten on ollut mielenkiintoista seurata miten koirat ratkaisevat ongelmia piilotettujen namupalojen kanssa.

Peli on tehty puusta ja tarkoitus on nostaa tai siirtää osia sivuun saadakseen namupaloja esiin osien alta.  Jokaisella lauman jäsenellä on oma tapansa ratkaista ongelma.  Seuraamalla heitä yksitellen, sain melko hyvän käsityksen niiden persoonallisuudesta samoin kuin niiden käytöksestä ja samalla vahvistui aikaisemmat käsitykseni niistä.  Meillä on mahtava lauma jossa on hauskoja ja aika fiksuja yksilöitä.  Olen niin ylpeä niistä.

Taika on huono käyttämään nenäänsä joten ei ollut ollenkaan yllätys, että hän vain tuijotti peliä ilman aikomustakaan nosta mitään.  Hän vain odotti auttavaa kättä joka kääntäisi puiset osat hänelle.  Taika on viisas koira, joka jättää likaisen työn aina muille.

Della taas ei ole lainkaan innokas käyttämään suutaan tällaisissa tilanteissa.  Vietettyäni kaksi vuotta Dellan kanssa saadakseni hänet noutamaan kapulan, ei ollut epäilystäkään, etteikö Della käyttäisi ensin tassujaan.  Niin hän teki.  Palikat ovat melko syvässä pelin pohjassa, mutta Della on periksiantamaton joten hän sai ne pois käyttämällä tehokasta, mutta myös väkivaltaista tassutekniikkaa.

Kuura lähestyi peliä ammattimaisesti.  Hän selvisi testistä loistavasti ja poimi osat yksitellen ja siirsi palat sivuun ennätysajassa.  Olin todella otettu.

Vimeisinpä, mutta ei vähäisimpänä, Brie tutustui peliin ja hänen ratkaisu ongelmaan oli yksinkertainen.  Hän käänsi koko pelin ylösalaisin ja se siitä.  Miksi pistää liikkaa energiaa ajattelemiseen kun saat nopeamman tuloksen käyttämällä voimaa..!
