17.-18.08. Agility.Ax, Jomala, Åland

It's always nice to go to the Åland Islands.  The people is friendly, the island environment is just amazing and the agility competitions are very well arranged.  The classes are also usually smaller than the ones on the mainland.  We're enjoying competing in Åland and therefore we keep on going back there.  There are two agility clubs in the Åland Islands and both clubs are also excellent in rewarding their winning competitors.  Seldom you get any prize cups or rosettes anymore being on the winner's stand.  In my opinion it's such a pity.  I understand if you're competing in class 3, but for competitors in the lower classes it's always nice to get a memorable prize.

Della and I had a successful weekend and I'm very proud of my dog.  We participated in five competitions, three on Saturday and two on Sunday, and we managed to come in as winners in two of them.  One of our winning rounds also was a clean run and Della got her first mark concerning clean runs in Class 2 in her official competition book.  We also got three disqualifications during the weekend and one of them was so close to being a clean run.  I was of course too slow - again(!) - and Della chose another wrong obstacle only three obstacles from the finish line...  Runs like that really keeps the handler hungry!

Taika had an ill stomach on Saturday morning and we were really worried about her.  Pasi was ready to cancel their three starts during the day if the situation didn't improve.  A non barking or hungry Taika is a Taika really out of order.  Fortunately, Taika got better as the day passed on and at the time for their first competition Taika was back to normal - shouting and really eager for getting out on the track.  Pasi had to battle with Taika's contacts as usual and their best result was a 6th place after having jumped the contacts on the A-frame and dog walk.  They also had a refusal and the result said 15 faults and a slight overtime of two seconds.

Last but not least, a big thank you to Dan and Ninna Lindholm for having us this weekend.  We've enjoyed every minute of your lovely hospitality, good food and great company!

The joy of success.

Onnistumisen ilo.

Ahvenanmaalla on aina kiva vierailla.  Ihmiset ovat ystävällisiä, luonto ihmeellinen ja agilitykisat hyvin järjestettyjä.  Myös kisaluokat ovat usein pienempiä kuin mantereella. Me nautimme kisaamisesta Ahvenanmaalla ja siksi aina palaamme sinne.  Ahvenanmaalla on kaksi agilityseuraa ja molemmilla on aina upeat palkinnot voittajille.  Nykyään voittajat saavat enää harvoin ruusukkeita ja pokaaleja, se on mielestäni harmi.  Ymmärrän jos kisaat kolmosluokassa, mutta alemmissa luokissa kisaavilla on aina kiva saada muistoja.

Dellalla ja minulla oli menestyksekäs viikonloppu ja olen erittäin ylpeä koirastani.  Kisasimme lauantaina kolme ja sunnuntaina kaksi starttia ja onnistuimme voittamaan niistä kaksi.  Toinen voittoratamme oli myös puhdas nollarata ja saimme kisakirjaamme ensimmäisen LUVA-merkinnän kakkosluokassa.  Saimme myös kolme hylkyä viikonlopun aikana ja yksi niistä oli todella lähellä olla nollarata.  Olin tietysti taas liian hidas - jälleen kerran(!) - ja Della valitsi väärän esteen kun vain kolme estettä oli jäljellä.  Tuollaiset radat todella pitävät ohjaajan nälkäisenä!

Taikalla oli vatsakipuja lauantaiaamuna ja olimme todella huolestuneita hänestä.  Pasi oli valmis perumaan kaikki kolme kisaa jos tilanne ei parantuisi.  Taika joka ei ole nälkäinen ja haukkuva ei ole kunnossa.  Onneksi Taikan vointi parani aamun kuluessa ja ensimmäiseen starttiin mennessä Taika oli jo oma itsensä - haukkuva ja innokas pääsemään radalle.  Pasi sai taas taistella Taikan kontaktien kanssa kuten yleensä ja heidän paras sijoitus oli kuudes Taikan hypättyä sekä A-esteen että puomin kontaktit.  Radalta tuli myös yksi kielto ja lopputulos oli 15 virhepistettä ja hieman 2 sek. yliaikaa.

Vielä suuri kiitos Lindholmin Danille ja Ninnalle hienosta viikonlopusta!  Saimme nauttia heidän vieraanvaraisuudesta, hyvästä ruuasta ja mukavasta seurasta.

10.-11.08. VAS & Rantareviiri, Vaasa

We spent the last weekend in Vaasa, also known as the sunniest town of Finland.  The Agility Club of Vaasa (VAS) arranged great games during two days with a lot of fun.  Our agility careers once started in Vaasa, in August 2004.  I competed with Pinja and Pasi with Kelly and Vaasa was everything but sunny back then, so were our results - DISQ, DISQ, DISQ...

This time we avoided storms of thunder and our results were on the brighter side too.  We also enjoyed the company of three of our very good agility friends from Harjavalta - Rami, Suski and Kaitsu.  Rami is a great showman.  When he's on the track everything is possible and impossible, not a dull moment.  Suski had the honour to be together with us during our "disaster weekend" in 2004.  She's an experienced agility handler and I have always admired her style.  It's great to see she still wants to be seen with us...  Kaitsu hasn't got a dog to compete with at the moment, but there's no better coaching coming from him.  He's got a lovely way to put things into words.  Being an agility handler you see to that you always honour your dog no matter what your result is.  This weekend Kaitsu also taught us to honour our wallets!  Not a bad advice at all in times like today, competing is fun but not for free.

Della did very well again.  Out of four competitions our best achievement was a second place after a contact fault when coming down from the A-frame.  This is becoming a problem after having changed Della's 2-on-2-off-performance to running straight down instead.  Della has no problem performing the dog walk using 2-on-2-off.  On the A-frame Della started to stop too high up and denied to come down.  I had to figure something out.  In the beginning it worked having Della running down, but when the speed increased Della started to jump off too early.  Now I will just have to re-train the A-frame so Della really understands what to do.  Back to school!

Pasi and Taika usually have problems with the contacts, but on Sunday afternoon they had a marvellous performance and made a clean run and came in third.  Yes!  A lovely ending of a memorable weekend.  Also congrats to Suski and Pihka for coming in third twice during the weekend in the class for large dogs!  Harjavalta has been seen and heard!

Kunnia koirille ja lompakoille.

Vietimme viime viikonlopun Vaasassa, tunnetusti Suomen aurinkoisimmassa kaupungissa.  Vaasan Agility Seura (VAS) oli järjestänyt hienot kahden päivän kisat.  Meidän agilityura alkoi aikoinaan elokuussa 2004 Vaasassa.  Kisasin silloin Pinjan kanssa ja Pasi Kellyn kanssa ja Vaasa oli tuolloin kaikkea muuta kuin aurinkoinen, kuten meidän tuloksemmekin - HYL, HYL, HYL...

Tällä kertaa vältimme sateen ja ukkosen ja tuloksetkin olivat kirkkaammalla puolella.  Meillä oli seurana myös kolme hyvää agility-ystävää Harjavallasta - Rami, Suski ja Kaitsu.  Rami on todellinen showmies.  Hänen ollessa radalla kaikki on mahdollista, ei ole tylsiä hetkiä.  Suskilla oli aikoinaan kunnia olla mukana myös meidän "katastrofiviikonloppuna" 2004.  Hän on kokenut agilityohjaaja ja olen aina ihaillut hänen taitojaan.  On hienoa, että hän vieläkin haluaa näyttäytyä kanssamme...  Kaitsulla ei juuri nyt ollut kisaavaa koiraa, mutta parempaa valmennusta ei saa keneltään.  Hänellä on hieno tapa ilmaista asiat sanoin.  Agilityohjaajan tulee aina kunniottaa koiraansa riippumatta lopputuloksesta.  Tänä viikonlopuna Kaitsun mielestä ohjaajan tulee myös kunnioittaa lompakkoaan.  Ei huono neuvo näinä aikoina, kisaaminen on hauskaa muttei ilmaista.

Della teki taas hienoja ratoja.  Neljästä startista paras saavutus oli toinen sija A-esteen kontaktivirheellä.  Tästä on tullut ongelma muutettuani Dellan 2-on-2-off suorituksen juoksukontaktin yritykseksi.  Dellalla ei ole ongelmia puomilla 2-on-2-off suorituksen kanssa.  A-esteellä Della oli alkanut pysähtyä liian ylös ja kieltäytyi tulemasta alas.  Minun piti keksiä jotain tähän.  Alkuun Della juoksi hienosti kontaktin alas, mutta vauhdin lisäännyttyä Della on alkanut hypätä A-esteeltä.  Nyt meidän pitää vain treenata A-este taas niin, että Della todella tietää mitä tehdään.  Takaisin koulun penkille!

Pasilla ja Taikalla on tavallisesti ongelmia kontaktien kanssa, mutta sunnuntai-iltapäivän radalla he tekivät hienon puhtaan radan ja sijoittuivat kolmanneksi.  Yes!  Hieno päätös ikimuistoiselle viikonlopulle.  Onnittelut myös Suskille ja Pihkalle kahdesta kolmossijasta viikonlopun kolmosluokan maksikoirissa!  HARJA on taas kuulunut ja näkynyt!

04.08. Nokia Group Show for FCI 1 & 2

Last Sunday we headed for Nokia and the Nokia Group Show.  I eagered for a third "Excellent" for Della, which would make Della entitled to one of the many special show rosette prizes stated by the Finnish Shetland Sheepdog Association.  It means that Della has got to be judged as "excellent" three times during the actual calendar year.  It's quite a challenge for us.

The judge for the day was the very pleasant Mari Palgi from Estonia.  The weather was extremely hot and though Della behaved very well in the ring, the judge would have liked to see Della with a bit more self-confidence.  I guess it's because of the slight shyness for the day Della got the evaluation "Very Good" (VG) and our hunt for the last "excellent" continues...

"Right size and strenght of bones.  Well-rounded muzzle.  Round eyes and round skull.  Well used ears.  Enough neck, tight body, well angulated.  Lacks coat for the day.  Needs more self-confidence."

Viime suununtaina suuntasimme Nokialle ja kohti Nokian Ryhmänäyttelyä.  Haaveilin kolmannesta "erinomaisesta" Dellalle, joka antaisi Dellalle mahdollisuuden saada yhden Shetlanninlammaskoirat ry:n monista erikoisruusukkeista.  Se tarkoittaa, että Dellan pitäisi saada erinomainen-arvostelun kolme kertaa kalenterivuoden aikana.  Se on melkoinen haaste meille.

Päivän tuomarina toimi todella mukava Mari Palgi Virosta.  Sää oli todella kuuma ja vaikka Della käyttäytyi kehässä hienosti, tuomari olisi toivonut Dellalle hiukan enemmän itsevarmuutta.  Ilmeisesti pieni ujous arvostelutilanteessa sai tuomarin antamaan Dellalle tällä kertaa "Erittäin Hyvä" (EH) ja meidän metsästyksemme "erinomaisesta" jatkuu...

27.-28.07. RKS, Rauma

The town of Rauma is famous for its lacework and once a year, in July, this picturesque seaport town arranges the Rauma Lace Week.  During the last weekend of this particular week the Rauma Club of Working- and Companion Dogs invites agility people to come and compete during a two-day-agility-event, The Agility Lace Event.  The competitions are very well organized and the spirit is absolutely great!  This year we also had to cope with an incredible heat wave and the competing conditions were quite tough for handlers and dogs.

Our team had a great weekend and Della made a clean run in her second agility competition in Class 1 on Saturday.  Della came in second after I had really made sure that every obstacle was performed without faults, especially the A-frame, which has caused us some troubles lately.  I wanted our last clean run in Class 1 so badly that I almost had Della walking around the track and our time of performance was not the best, nor was my style of handling...  Fortunately points for style are still unknown in agility!  We got our last needed clean run and the very wanted certificate for passing on to Class 2 and I was just overwhelmed with joy!  Della's debut in Class 2 started off very nicely and our three first competitions ended up with the results DISQ, 3rd place and 1st.  I am more than satisfied though our clean run in the last jumping competition was punished with a 0.73 sec overtime.

Taika and Pasi also had a great weekend and in their last competition they made a clean run in Class 3 and came in sixth in a jumping competiton of 26 competitors.  Very nice!

Rauman kaupunki on kuuluisa pitseistään ja kerran vuodessa, heinäkuussa, tämä pittoreski satamakaupunki järjestää Pitsiviikon.  Tämän erityisen viikon aikana Rauman Käyttö- ja Seurakoirat ry kutsuu agilityväen kisaamaan kahden päivän agilitytapahtumaan.  Kilpailut ovat todella hyvin järjestetyt ja tunnelma on aivan mahtava!  Tänä vuonna tosin helteinen ilma teki kisoista rankan niin ohjaajille kuin koirille.

Meidän tiimillä oli hieno viikonloppu ja Della teki 0-radan toisessa ykkösluokan agilitykisassa lauantaina.  Della sijoittui kakkoseksi ja kun vielä olin varmistanut jokaisen esteen niin ettei tullut virheitä, eritysesti A-esteen, joka on viime aikoina aiheuttanut meille ongelmia.  Halusin meidän viimeistä nousunollaa niin paljon, että pakotin Dellan miltei kävelemään radan läpi ja aika ei ollut häävi, eikä myöskään ohjaustyylini...  Onneksi tyylipisteitä ei vieläkään jaeta agilityssä!  Me saimme viimeisen nollan, sertin ja nousimme kakkosluokkaan ja olin todella onnellinen.  Dellan debyytti kakkosluokassa alkoi mukavasti ja meidän kolme ensimmäistä tulosta uudessa luokassa oli HYL, 3. sija ja ykkössija.  Olin erityisesti enemmän kuin tyytyväinen meidän viimeiseen hyppyrataan vaikka tuli harmillisesti 0.73 s yliaikaa.

Taikalla ja Pasilla oli myös hieno viikonloppu ja hekin tekivät viimeisessä startissa puhtaan hyppyradan kolmosluokassa, sijoittumalla kuudenneksi kun koirakoita oli 26.  Todella hienoa!

12.-14.07. KLAG, Kokkola

Summer is lovely, especially if you're on a holiday.  I'm not... - and our team's blog has lived quite a quiet life lately.

After many years of absence due to different reasons, we decided to go to Kokkola and KLAG's well-known three-day-agility-event in July.  Once again we experienced the joy of being with good friends, competing (maybe not always so seriously...), tasty food and high spirits.

Though we had no clean runs this time both Taika and Della did great.  The line between success and failure is just so thin sometimes.  The team's best outcome was Della coming in second in our next last competition during a very intense weekend.  Among other things Della was awarded with a nice and handy blue umbrella.

Säätyttömme Della. 

Kesä on ihana, erityisesti jos on lomalla.  Minä en ole... - ja tiimin blogi on elänyt hiljais eloa viime aikoina.

Muutamien poissaolovuosien jälkeen, eri syistä, päätimme taas mennä Kokkolaan ja KLAGin perinteisiin kesäagilitykisoihin heinäkuussa.  Koimme taas ihanaa aikaa hyvien ystävien seurassa, kisaamalla (toki ei aina niin vakavasti...), nauttimalla hyvästä ruoasta ja mahtavasta fiiliksestä. 

Vaikka 0-radat jäivät tekemättä tällä kertaa sekä Taika että Della tekivät hyvää työtä.  Ero onnistumisen ja epäonnistumisen välillä on joskus vain niin hiuksen hieno.  Tiimimme parhaan tuloksen intensiivisen viikonlopun aikana teki Della.  Della sijoittui kakkoseksi meidän toiseksi viimeisessä kisassa.  Voitto oli muun muassa upean sinisen sateenvarjon arvoinen.

21.-23.06. TSAU Midsummer Agility, Tuorla

This year's Midsummer is easy to sum up in a few words - blue skies, excellent company and agility.  It couldn't be better!  I've enjoyed every minute of our stay in Tuorla where the agility club of TSAU once again arranged great competitions during the whole Midsummer weekend.

The place for the competitions is situated in an idyllic mansion environment with a stunning garden, fruit trees and lovely trails in the nearby forest.  The competitions are also held on grass, which is great for dog paws at sunny weather.  We were fortunate because we got some rain during the night between Friday and Saturday, but it was such a small shower that it didn't turn the ground slippery.  If you had taken a look at Pasi's performances with Taika on Saturday afternoon, you could think otherwise because - at least twice - Pasi almost took a fall...  Someone was of the opinion that Pasi needed new shoes, another shouted it was due to too much beer - or too little...  I say it's because of Midsummer, the high spirit, the joy and just taking it easy and enjoying a good laugh among great friends!

Our team did very well and we are satisfied with our results during the weekend.  Altogether Pasi and I had five competitions each with the following results:

Midsummer 2013.

Juhannus 2013.

Tämän vuoden Juhannus on helppo tiivistää muutamiin sanoihin - sininen taivas, loistavaa seuraa ja agilityä.  Ei voisi olla paremmin!  Olen jälleen kerran nauttinut jokaisesta minuutista TSAU:n loistavasti järjestämästä Juhannuksen kisaviikonlopusta.

Kisapaikka sijaitsee idyllisessä kartanoympäristössä jossa on ihastuttava puutarha, hedelmäpuita ja ihania polkuja lähimetsikössä.  Kisat käytiin nurmikolla, joka on ihana koiran tassuille aurinkoisella säällä.  Olimme onnekkaita koska satoi vain perjantain ja lauantain välisenä yönä ja sade oli niin vähäistä, ettei kenttä muuttunut liukkaaksi.  Jos olisi nähnyt Pasin ja Taikan esitykset lauantai-iltapäivällä, voisi luulla toisin sillä Pasi oli kaatua - ainakin kahdesti...  Joku oli sitä mieltä, että Pasi tarvitsee uudet kengät, joku taas huusi, että mies on maistanut liikaa olutta - tai liian vähän...  Minun mielestäni kaikki johtuu Juhannuksesta, hyvästä tunnelmasta, ilosta ja vain rentoutumisesta ja hauskanpidosta todella hyvien ystävien seurassa!

Tiimimme onnistui todella hyvin ja olemme tyytyväisiä viikonlopun tuloksiin.  Molemmilla oli viisi kisaa ja tulokset olivat seuraavat:

On heat / Juoksuaika

We've had a topsy-turvy situation at home for quite a while by now.  Both our bitches are on heat and we're sharing the house with two hormone bombs.  Among other things Della has turned night into day and wants to play with Taika after midnight.  Taika, on the other hand, doesn't want to play at all three o' clock in the morning and goes on sleeping.  Della tries everything and jumps into my bed, where Taika usually sleeps, and out of it.  The other night I got quite fed up with being a human trampoline and got out of bed, decided to do something useful and started ironing for half an hour...  What a crazy dog's life!

Because our dogs have been on heat we have not been able to train in the club's field in Harjavalta.  All training has had to be done at home and though it feels that Taika and Della behave quite foolishly most of the time, we've had our moments of success too.  Taika, for instance, is just marvellous fetching the round stick.  Speaking of obedience, the stick exercise is almost "the one and only" well done exercise for Taika.  Not much more is going right for this impulsive dog.  To get Taika to stay in place for two minutes is almost impossible!  Therefore it's great to see Taika doing such a good job with the stick.  If Taika loves the stick, Della dislikes it just as much.  Della does overall a great work in obedience, stays in place for the time requested and is quiet and calm.  Della is in many ways the opposite of Taika though the bitches are related to each other.  I just wish Taika could teach Della how to get more in love with the wooden stick exercises...  On the other hand, what would life be without challenges and lovely dogs?!

Se puinen noutokapula...

Meillä on ollut aikamoinen hullumylly kotona jo jonkin aikaa.  Molemmilla nartuilla on juoksut ja jaamme kotimme kahden hormonipommin kanssa.  Della on kaiken muun lisäksi kääntänyt vuorokauden ajat ylösalaisin ja haluaa leikkiä Taikan kanssa yöllä.  Taika taas ei halua leikkiä aamuyöllä kello kolmen aikaa ja haluaa vain jatkaa nukkumista.  Della tekee kaikensa ja hyppii edes takaisin minun puolelle sänkyä jossa Taika myös nukkuu.  Edellisenä yönä sain tarpeekseni ihmistrampoliinina olemisesta ja nousin ylös ja päätin tehdä jotain hyödyllistä.  Aloin silittämään...  Mitä hullua koiran elämää!

Juoksujen takia meillä ei ole ollut mahdollista treenata Harjavallan koirakentällä.  Kaikki treenit on tehty kotona ja vaikka tuntuu, että Taika ja Della käyttäytyvät hassusti suurimman osan ajasta, olemme silti myös onnistuneet.  Taika esimerkiksi on aivan uskomaton noutokapulan kanssa.  Tottelevaisuudesta puhuttaessa, se onkin sitten melkein "se yksi ja ainoa" onnistunut harjoitus tälle kiihkeälle neidille.  Taikalle kahden minuutin paikalla makuu onkin sitten melkein mahdottomuus!  Siksi onkin niin hienoa nähdä Taikan tekemä kapulan nouto.  Jos Taika rakastaa kapulaa, Della inhoaa sitä vähintään yhtä paljon.  Muuten Della on todella hyvä tokossa ja pysyy paikalla vaaditun ajan, se on hiljaa ja rauhallinen.  Della on monin tavoin vastakohta Taikalle, vaikka nartut ovat sukua keskenään.  Toivoisin vain, että Taika voisi opettaa Dellaa pitämään noutukapulasta...  Toisaalta, mitä elämä olisi ilman haasteita ja ihania koiria?!
