21.-23.06. TSAU Midsummer Agility, Tuorla

This year's Midsummer is easy to sum up in a few words - blue skies, excellent company and agility.  It couldn't be better!  I've enjoyed every minute of our stay in Tuorla where the agility club of TSAU once again arranged great competitions during the whole Midsummer weekend.

The place for the competitions is situated in an idyllic mansion environment with a stunning garden, fruit trees and lovely trails in the nearby forest.  The competitions are also held on grass, which is great for dog paws at sunny weather.  We were fortunate because we got some rain during the night between Friday and Saturday, but it was such a small shower that it didn't turn the ground slippery.  If you had taken a look at Pasi's performances with Taika on Saturday afternoon, you could think otherwise because - at least twice - Pasi almost took a fall...  Someone was of the opinion that Pasi needed new shoes, another shouted it was due to too much beer - or too little...  I say it's because of Midsummer, the high spirit, the joy and just taking it easy and enjoying a good laugh among great friends!

Our team did very well and we are satisfied with our results during the weekend.  Altogether Pasi and I had five competitions each with the following results:

Midsummer 2013.

Juhannus 2013.

Tämän vuoden Juhannus on helppo tiivistää muutamiin sanoihin - sininen taivas, loistavaa seuraa ja agilityä.  Ei voisi olla paremmin!  Olen jälleen kerran nauttinut jokaisesta minuutista TSAU:n loistavasti järjestämästä Juhannuksen kisaviikonlopusta.

Kisapaikka sijaitsee idyllisessä kartanoympäristössä jossa on ihastuttava puutarha, hedelmäpuita ja ihania polkuja lähimetsikössä.  Kisat käytiin nurmikolla, joka on ihana koiran tassuille aurinkoisella säällä.  Olimme onnekkaita koska satoi vain perjantain ja lauantain välisenä yönä ja sade oli niin vähäistä, ettei kenttä muuttunut liukkaaksi.  Jos olisi nähnyt Pasin ja Taikan esitykset lauantai-iltapäivällä, voisi luulla toisin sillä Pasi oli kaatua - ainakin kahdesti...  Joku oli sitä mieltä, että Pasi tarvitsee uudet kengät, joku taas huusi, että mies on maistanut liikaa olutta - tai liian vähän...  Minun mielestäni kaikki johtuu Juhannuksesta, hyvästä tunnelmasta, ilosta ja vain rentoutumisesta ja hauskanpidosta todella hyvien ystävien seurassa!

Tiimimme onnistui todella hyvin ja olemme tyytyväisiä viikonlopun tuloksiin.  Molemmilla oli viisi kisaa ja tulokset olivat seuraavat:

On heat / Juoksuaika

We've had a topsy-turvy situation at home for quite a while by now.  Both our bitches are on heat and we're sharing the house with two hormone bombs.  Among other things Della has turned night into day and wants to play with Taika after midnight.  Taika, on the other hand, doesn't want to play at all three o' clock in the morning and goes on sleeping.  Della tries everything and jumps into my bed, where Taika usually sleeps, and out of it.  The other night I got quite fed up with being a human trampoline and got out of bed, decided to do something useful and started ironing for half an hour...  What a crazy dog's life!

Because our dogs have been on heat we have not been able to train in the club's field in Harjavalta.  All training has had to be done at home and though it feels that Taika and Della behave quite foolishly most of the time, we've had our moments of success too.  Taika, for instance, is just marvellous fetching the round stick.  Speaking of obedience, the stick exercise is almost "the one and only" well done exercise for Taika.  Not much more is going right for this impulsive dog.  To get Taika to stay in place for two minutes is almost impossible!  Therefore it's great to see Taika doing such a good job with the stick.  If Taika loves the stick, Della dislikes it just as much.  Della does overall a great work in obedience, stays in place for the time requested and is quiet and calm.  Della is in many ways the opposite of Taika though the bitches are related to each other.  I just wish Taika could teach Della how to get more in love with the wooden stick exercises...  On the other hand, what would life be without challenges and lovely dogs?!

Se puinen noutokapula...

Meillä on ollut aikamoinen hullumylly kotona jo jonkin aikaa.  Molemmilla nartuilla on juoksut ja jaamme kotimme kahden hormonipommin kanssa.  Della on kaiken muun lisäksi kääntänyt vuorokauden ajat ylösalaisin ja haluaa leikkiä Taikan kanssa yöllä.  Taika taas ei halua leikkiä aamuyöllä kello kolmen aikaa ja haluaa vain jatkaa nukkumista.  Della tekee kaikensa ja hyppii edes takaisin minun puolelle sänkyä jossa Taika myös nukkuu.  Edellisenä yönä sain tarpeekseni ihmistrampoliinina olemisesta ja nousin ylös ja päätin tehdä jotain hyödyllistä.  Aloin silittämään...  Mitä hullua koiran elämää!

Juoksujen takia meillä ei ole ollut mahdollista treenata Harjavallan koirakentällä.  Kaikki treenit on tehty kotona ja vaikka tuntuu, että Taika ja Della käyttäytyvät hassusti suurimman osan ajasta, olemme silti myös onnistuneet.  Taika esimerkiksi on aivan uskomaton noutokapulan kanssa.  Tottelevaisuudesta puhuttaessa, se onkin sitten melkein "se yksi ja ainoa" onnistunut harjoitus tälle kiihkeälle neidille.  Taikalle kahden minuutin paikalla makuu onkin sitten melkein mahdottomuus!  Siksi onkin niin hienoa nähdä Taikan tekemä kapulan nouto.  Jos Taika rakastaa kapulaa, Della inhoaa sitä vähintään yhtä paljon.  Muuten Della on todella hyvä tokossa ja pysyy paikalla vaaditun ajan, se on hiljaa ja rauhallinen.  Della on monin tavoin vastakohta Taikalle, vaikka nartut ovat sukua keskenään.  Toivoisin vain, että Taika voisi opettaa Dellaa pitämään noutukapulasta...  Toisaalta, mitä elämä olisi ilman haasteita ja ihania koiria?!

25.-26.05. The Harjavalta Group Show, FCI 1 & 2

During last weekend almost 800 dogs entered our annual The Harjavalta Group Show at our club in Hosiossaari, Harjavalta.  Saturday was the day for dogs belonging to FCI Group 1 and on Sunday the breeds of FCI Group 2 entered our field.  On Sunday we also enjoyed the competition for Best in Show (BIS).  The weather was once absolute fantastic during the whole weekend and the spirit was high.  The judges of this year's show came from Finland, France, Macedonia, Romania and Sweden and their presence together with the sunny weather created a lovely touch of almost being abroad.  Shortly, we really enjoyed a pair of great days filled with the things we love the most - dogs!

Della attended the show on Saturday and was judged by Mr. Mile Aleksoski from Macedonia.  Della took part in the Open Class for bitches.  Altogether there were twenty-two bitches in the class competing for the so wanted red ribbon.  Again I was taken by surprise when Della was awarded with EXCELLENT (EXC).  In the final competition Della did not make it to the top four, but it didn't matter.  Just getting the red ribbon and the evaluation EXC made my day more than excellent!

Della's breeder also came to visit us and during the day we also met with some of Della's and Taika's relatives of different ages.  Such a lovely and memorable day!

"Medium strong.  Correct bite, correct set of ears and tail.  Nice neck, topline can be straighter.  Little open angulations.  Correct moving."

Viime viikonloppuna lähes 800 koiraa osallistui seuramme vuosittaiseen ryhmänäyttelyyn Hosiossaaren kentällä, Harjavallassa.  Lauantaina kentällä esiintyivät FCI 1 koirat  ja sunnuntaina oli vuorossa FCI 2 rodut ja Best in Show (BIS).  Ilma oli kerrankin upea molempina näyttelypäivinä ja tunnelma oli korkealla.  Tänä vuonna tuomarit tulivat Suomesta, Ranskasta, Makedoniasta, Romaniasta ja Ruotsista ja heidän läsnolo ja aurinkoinen sää sai paikan tuntumaan kuin oltaisin ulkomailla.  Lyhyesti, nautimme kahdesta loistavasta päivästä niiden kanssa joista pidämme eniten - koirat!

Della osallistui lauantaina näyttelyyn ja hänet arvosteli Mile Aleksoski Makedoniasta.  Della kisasi narttujen Avoimessa Luokassa.  Luokassa oli kaikkiaan 22 narttua tavoittelemassa haluttua punaista nauhaa.  Koin taas yllätyksen kun Della sai laatuluokassa arvostelun ERINOMAINEN (ERI).  Kilpailuluokassa Della ei sijoittunut neljän parhaan joukkoon, mutta se ei haittanut.  Punaisen nauhan ja erinoimaisen arvostelun saaminen teki päivästäni enemmän kuin loistavan.

Dellan kasvattaja tuli myös käymään ja päivän aikana tapasimme myös Dellan ja Taikan eri ikäisiä sukulaisia.  Niin ihana ja ikimuistonen päivä!

18.-19.05. ÅBSK, Åland

What a feeling!  After nine months of time-out, I'm competing with Della in agility again!  I've been struggling with Della's lack of self-confidence and how to gain it back to what it once was.  Pasi has helped me a lot, among other things he took us back to square one in agility.  Through fun and easy exercises Della has found the joy of agility again.  Kati Häkli, Kontaktikoirat ry in Pori, on the other hand, has worked a lot with Della's weak courage by putting us in situations where Della has to trust me.  Bit by bit Della's behaviour has changed and today Della's tail is usually worn high instead of between her legs.  I'm still having a lot of work to do with my dog, but it's so much easier now when I see the good outcome of our efforts during all these months.  The trip to the island of Åland and ÅBSK's traditional Zorro Cup agility games were going to be a kind of final test to see if we're ready or not.  Today I say we are.

Della participated in four competitions and though three of them ended up being disqualifications, I'm more than happy.  Della loves doing agility again and the speed that comes with Della's joy causes problems in my handling at the moment.  I'm just too slow to be honest!  If the snail can't show the frog how to jump the right obstacle in time, there can't be another result than a beautiful disaster!  So no shame on Della any longer, just blame its lazy handler!  Now it's my turn to really work on my handling, technique and movements.  I do believe in my dog and our performances, because the race we succeeded in during the weekend turned out to be not just a clean run but also a winning one (0 / -9.30 sec.)!  My active agility life is making a new fresh start and Della will see to that there won't be any dull moments in it...  That's for sure!

Pasi and Taika also had a very successful weekend.  They made a clean run on Saturday too and came in second (0 / -4.58 sec.) in a very tough competition.  The other two competitions during the day were unfortunately stated as disqualifications.  Sunday brought light into their lives again and they came in fifth after a too familiar contact fault on the dogwalk... (5 / -7.10 sec.)

Thanks to ÅBSK for great games again!  We had such fun - as always!  We'll be back..!

Ahvenanmaa ja paljon ihania muistoja!

Mikä tunne!  Yhdeksän kuukauden tauon jälkeen Della ja minä kisaamme taas agilityssä!  Olen kamppaillut Dellan kadoksissa olleen itseluottamuksen kanssa ja sen saamiseksi takaisin.  Pasi on auttanut paljon, mm. palauttamalla meidät takaisin agilityn "lähtöruutuun".  Hauskuuden ja helppojen harjoitusten kautta Della on taas löytänyt agilityn riemun.  Kati Häkli, Kontaktikoirat ry Porissa, taas on tehnyt paljon töitä Dellan rohkeuden kanssa tekemällä meille harjoitteita joissa Dellan on luotettava minuun.  Pikkuhiljaa työ on tuottanut tulosta ja Dellan käytös on muuttunut sellaiseksi, että häntä on nyt useimmin pystyssä kuin koipien välissä.  Meillä on vielä paljon töitä Dellan kanssa, mutta nyt se on paljon helpompaa kun näkee monen kuukauden hyvän työn tuloksen.  Matka Ahvenanmaalle ÅBSK:n perinteiseen agilityn Zorro Cupiin oli jollain tavalla "loppukoe" olisimmeko valmiit vai ei.  Tänään voin sanoa, että olemme valmiit.

Della osallistui neljään starttiin ja vaikka kolmen lopputulos oli hylky, olen enemmän kuin tyytyväinen.  Della rakastaa taas agilityä ja vauhti ja tekemisen halu aiheuttaa nyt ongelmia minun ohjaukseen.  Rehellisesti sanoen, olen liian hidas!  Jos en ehdi ohjaamaan Dellaa oikealle esteelle ei lopputulos voi olla muuta kuin ihana katastrofi!  Dellan ei enää tarvitse hävetä muuta kuin hidasta ohjaajaa!  Nyt on minun vuoroni harjoitella ohjaamista, tekniikkaa ja liikkumista.  Uskon nyt koiraani ja suoritukseemme, sillä viikonlopun aikana onnistunut ratamme ei ollut vain puhdas rata vaan myös nopein ratasuoritus ja voitto (0 / -9.30 s / 1./7)!  Aktiivinen agilityelämä on taas alkanut ja Della tulee huomaamaan, ettei agilityssä enää tule tylsiä hetkiä... 

Myös Pasin ja Taikan viikonloppu oli todella menestyksellinen.  Lauantain kovassa seurassa kisatulla agilityradalla puhdas suoritus ja toinen sija (0 / -4.58 s / 2./13).  Kaksi muuta lauantain starttia (hyppradat) olivat molemmat valitettavasti hylättyjä.  Sunnuntain hyvän agilitysuorituksen sijoitus oli viides, liiankin tutun puomin kontaktivirheen jälkeen... (5 / -7.10 s / 5./13)  

Kiitos taas ÅBSK:lle hienosta kisaviikonlopusta!  Meillä oli todella mukavaa - kuten aina!  We'll be back..! 

A dog afraid of orchids / Koira joka pelkää orkideoita

I love orchids, but Della doesn't and I just can't figure out why?  The flowers are just absolute stunning.  They are so beautiful and when being in bloom, you also get to enjoy them for so many months.  I keep my orchids on a small sideboard at the window in our living-room.  There are seven of them and at the moment three of them are in full bloom.  The oldest one is eight years old and is still going strong.  Once a week I take care of my orchids and how I try to cheat my dog, Della knows what's up.  I just have to move towards my orchid table and Della is prepared to escape the room.  Della sweeps over the floor and out of my way.  I have no idea why?  Of course, the orchids are a bit swaggling when moving them from one place to another.  Their stalks are long and their roots are reaching out like green fingers in the air...  According to Della we are probably living some kind of Scary Movie, The Orchid Episode during the day I care for my odd flowers.  Fortunately, Taika practices more traditional sheltie fears like the sound of thunder and fireworks...

Della ja orkidea ei vain toimi...

Minä pidän orkideoista, mutta Della ei ja en ole vielä ymmärtänyt miksi?  Kukat ovat aivan ihania.  Ne ovat niin kauniita ja kun ne kukkivat saa niistä vielä nauttia monta kuukautta.  Orkideoilla on oma paikka pienellä sivupöydällä lähellä ikkunaa olohuoneessamme.  Niitä on seitsemän ja tällä hetkellä kolme orkideaa on täydessä kukassa.  Minun vanhin orkidea on kahdeksan vuotta vanha ja on edelleen todella komea.  Kerran viikossa hoidan orkideat ja vaikka miten yritän huijata koiraani, Della tietää homman nimen.  Riittää, että lähestyn orkideojen pöytää ja Della on valmis lähtemään pakoon.  Matalalla tyylillä se lähtee huoneesta.  Minulla ei ole aavistustakaan miksi?  Tietysti orkideat ovat pikkasen huojuvia kun niitä siirretään paikasta toiseen.  Varret ovat pitkiä ja ilmajuuret kuin tarttuvia vihreitä sormia ilmassa...  Dellan mielestä elämme todennäköisesti jonkinlaisessa Scary Moviessa, The Orchid-jaksoa sinä päivänä kun hoidan omituisia kukkiani.  Onneksi Taika harrastaa enemmän perinteisiä shelttipelkoja kuten ukkosta ja ilotulituksia...

20.04. Main Specialty Sheltie Show, Kiljava

Last Saturday our team headed for Kiljava in the southern parts of Finland.  Della was to participate in the Main Specialty Sheltie Show of 2013.  When I got the show invitation letter a few weeks from that I had paid the entry fee, I just couldn't help thinking what a fool I am...  There had been an unexpectedly large amount of entries in this year's specialty show, altogether 284 shelties!  In the open class for bitches, Della had 48 shelties to compete with and I knew, the bitches were all going to be of absolute top quality.  Della was judged by the lovely Barbara Thornley from the United Kingdom.  Della has attended the open class for four times by now and the evaluation has been Very Good (VG) every time.  That's what I really hoped to get this time too, because the competition at a Main Specialty Show is just out of our league.  When Della was given the red ribbon and the evaluation Excellent (EXC), I was just overwhelmed!  It had been worth getting up just before 04:00 in the morning.  We enjoyed a day over my expectations!

"Head is balanced with flat skull and correct stop.  Eye is too round.  Full dentition.  Needs more underjaw.  Good upper arm, shoulder OK.  Needs more neck.  Good length of tail.  Is correct of size.  Moved well in front.  Needs more coat."

Viime lauantaina tiimimme suuntasi kohti Etelä-Suomea ja Kiljavaa.  Della osallistui Shetlanninlammaskoirien Pääerikoisnäyttelyyn 2013.  Kun sain näyttelykutsun pari viikkoa ilmoittautumismaksun jälkeen, ajattelin, että olen aivan hullu...  Näyttelyn osallistujamäärä oli tänä vuonna huikea eli yhteensä 284 shelttiä!  Avoimessa luokassa oli 49 narttua Della mukaan lukien ja tiesin, että kaikki nartut olisivat aivan huippuluokkaa.  Aivan ihastuttava Barbara Thornley Iso-Britanniasta tuomaroi avoimen luokan nartut.  Della on osallistunut neljä kertaa avoimeen luokkaan ja joka kerta arvostelu on ollut Erittäin Hyvä (EH).  Tavoitteeni oli nytkin EH, koska kilpailu erikoisnäyttelyssä on niin kova.  Olin aivan hämmästynyt kun kehäsihteeri näytti Dellalle punaista viuhkaa ja arvostelu oli siis Erinomainen (ERI)!  Oli sen arvoista nousta klo 04:00 aamulla.  Päivä oli aivan uskomaton!

"Tasapainonen pää, hyvä litteä kallo ja oikeanlainen otsapenger.  Liian pyöreät silmät.  Täydellinen hampaisto.  Alaleuka saisi olla vahvempi.  Hyvät olkavarret, olkapää OK.  Kaula voisi olla pidempi.  Hyvä hännän pituus.  Oikean kokoinen.  Hyvät liikkeet edessä.  Turkki saisi olla enemmän."

06.04. Purina Center, Kaarina

Jumps, sweat and laughs!  We had a really great two hours on our schedule last Saturday.  We went to Kaarina and the Purina Center, where we were trained in agility by Timo Liuhto, one of Finland's absolute top coaches.  We had also invited two of our trainees to come with us and we all enjoyed an afternoon full of useful exercises how to move more efficiently as a handler.  It's all about rythm and being in the right place at the right moment.  The handler's movements support the dog during its performance and the goal is to get such a smooth and easy handling as possible.  The course for the day was quite tricky here and there and offered a great deal of fun for both dogs and handlers.  Pasi and Taika did very well though Pasi had a few problems to find the key to Taika's stop button at some turns and his crazy "rocket dog" chose the wrong jumps.  My coordination, on the other hand, was just terrible.  I've always had a problem with the terms left and right and in combination with a fast dog the outcome is nothing else but a lovely disaster!  Della did a great job and when I have figured out how to manage my arms and legs, I think we still may have a quite bright agility future after all...  It was a pleasure to see how great our trainees did during the day too.  Our really big thanks go to the Dog's Club in Rauma, which offered us this opportunity.  Now we're looking forward to the upcoming outdoor season.

Kolme todella tyytyväistä koirakkoa.

Hyppyjä, hikeä ja naurua!  Meillä oli todella loistava kaksituntinen viime lauantaina.  Ajoimme Kaarinaan Purina Centerille, missä meillä oli agilitytreenit kouluttajana Timo Liuhto, yksi Suomen ehdottomista huippukouluttajista.  Olimme myös kutsuneet mukaan kaksi oppilastamme ja saimme kaikki nauttia iltapäivän aikana todella hyödyllisistä harjoituksista miten liikkua tehokkaammin ohjaajana.  Ohjauksessa tärkeintä on hyvä rytmi ja olla oikeassa paikassa oikealla hetkellä.  Ohjaajan liike tukee koiran suoritusta ja tavoitteena on saada ohjaus mahdollisimman joustavaksi ja helpoksi.  Päivän rata oli paikka paikoin melko haastava ja tarjosi paljon hauskuutta niin koirille kuin ohjaajillekin.  Pasi ja Taika onnistuivat todella hyvin vaikka Pasilla oli vaikeuksia saada Taika jarruttamaan tietyissä käännöksissä ja agilityhullu "rakettikoira" ampui väärään suuntaan.  Toisaalta minun kordinaatio oli aivan kauheaa.  Minulla on aina ollut ongelmia vasemman ja oikean kanssa ja yhdistelmään lisättynä nopea koira, ei lopputulos voi olla muuta kuin ihana katastrofi!  Della teki loistavaa työtä ja kun itse tajuan miten jalkani ja käteni toimivat, uskon, että meillä vielä voi olla valoisa agilityura edessämme...  Oli todella ilo nähdä miten hienosti oppilaamme onnistuivat päivän aikana.  Suuri kiitos RKS:lle joka tarjosi meille mahdollisuuden tähän.  Nyt odotamme innolla ulkokauden alkua.
